Puyo Puyo!! Quest information | |
Satan (known as Dark Prince outside Japan) is often the main antagonist of the series. He's the former owner of Carbuncle and dotes on him frequently. He apparently has a liking to Hawaiian shirts. He is attracted to Arle Nadja and claims her as his 'fiancée', though she and everyone else disagrees, and wishes to be with her under the starry night sky. According to some Compile profiles, he planned to give Carbuncle to his fiance, as proof of his love. As Carbuncle is with Arle, he is constantly chasing after her.
More often than not, he is the final character one must face in most Puyo Puyo titles. He is usually a powerful opponent too. With the notable exceptions of Puyo Puyo~n and Puyo Puyo 7, the Puyo in his stages are always programmed to fall at very high speeds, making him even more difficult to defeat.
Biography
Appearance
Satan is a young adult with long green hair, who true to his name has some demonic characteristics. He sports yellow horns that slightly curl outwards, pointy ears, a pair of bat-like wings that can retract, and red eyes. His general color scheme would use a dark blue, but starting with Puyo Puyo!! 20th Anniversary it would change to a dark red, with the exception of Puyo Puyo Tetris where it returns to blue.
In earlier games his outfit would resemble a robe with a yellow sash, shoulder pads, and a cape. Puyo Puyo! 15th Anniversary would drop the cape, while Puyo Puyo!! 20th Anniversary would change his outfit to more resemble a jacket.
Personality
Satan, despite his name, is often portrayed as a hopeless lover and rarely outright evil. Throughout the series he tries many schemes to try and fall in love with Arle, but it often backfires spectacularly. He boasts about his plans, even when it's blatantly not working, but quickly falls apart once his plans fail. This often makes him act immature, even to the point where he acts childish with petty insults. Otherwise, he has low tolerance towards others, quickly getting agitated if mocked and likewise insults others with sarcastic or brutally honest comments. Despite this, he can make friends with others.
A recurring element is his obsession with Arle and Carbuncle. In particular his obsession with Carbuncle is so great, he collects Carbuncle themed merchandise, to the point of dressing up as him, and Carbuncle being with Arle is what motivates Satan to marry Arle.
Abilities
Being the ruler of Puyo Hell, he has demonic magic to match. His spells consist, but are not limited to "Disaster", "Juggernaut", "Catastrophe", "Cataclysm", and "Ascension". In Puyo Puyo~n, they're themed after the circus, and sometimes his spells are after natural disasters. He is also known to have the spell "Satan Cross".
He also has some unnamed attacks in the older games. In Puyo Puyo CD, he can use all of Arle's spells.

Relationships
- Arle
- Because Carbuncle is with her, he firmly believes Arle is his fiancé, and is adamant in trying to have her as his wife. She is often the driving force of Satan's plans. Arle, however, does not share the sentiment, seeing it as incredibly annoying. Additionally, he admits in Rulue's Spring Break of Fists, that his interest in Arle isn't physical or romantic so much as that she brings him a sense of nostalgia, suggesting she subconsciously reminds him of Lilith.
- Carbuncle
- Satan is Carbuncle's previous owner, and he dotes on it to an obsessively high degree. Prior to Arle taking it in, he planned to give Carbuncle to his future wife as his proof of love.
- Lemres
- In Puyo Puyo Tetris 2, he meets up with Lemres and Ecolo to stop Marle. He requested Lemres to go find Arle and the others and help them out. Lemres also offered Satan some sweets, which he took.
- Ringo
- He & Ringo seem rather relaxed around each other despite their first interaction in Puyo Puyo 7 being on more unfriendly terms. In Act 4 of Puyo Puyo 7, Satan revealed to Ringo that he was actually the headmaster of Arle's magic school when the two of them arrived at Primp Town's magic school. The only times Ringo considers Satan an enemy is if he's doing anything "nasty" or "cruel."
- Rulue
- Rulue became loyal to Satan after meeting him at the end of Madou Monogatari: ARS. She often sings his praises and wants to do whatever she can to become nearer with Satan, though, he fears her cooking and at times, her physical prowess that rivals the power of magic. In issue 4 of the "Tottemo! Puyo Puyo" (とっても!ぷよぷよ) Manga, it seems they start hanging out more after he accidentally hurt her feelings. In Madou Monogatari Saturn, he is rather sensitive to her feelings when she starts doubting his innocence if he were behind the Yoggus attacking their world. He ensures especially to her that it wasn't him in this scene being that he enjoys their friendship with one another.
- Schezo Wegey
- Satan and Schezo have an antagonistic relationship as they both pursue Arle for their own purposes. He is quick to call Schezo a pervert whenever he misspeaks and doesn't hesitate to subdue him when he interferes with his plans.
History
Madou Monogatari series
Satan first appears as the final boss in Madou Monogatari EPISODE II: CARBUNCLE. Here he falls in love with Arle and wishes that they get married, but after she claims that she’s only interested in the treasure known as “ruberukuraku” (the jewel in Carbuncle’s forehead), he attacks her to protect Carbuncle’s life. Upon defeat, Arle meets Carbuncle and takes him away from Satan. In Madou Monogatari: Hanamaru Dai Youchienji, Satan has a fan-club is inside his very own mansion. However, the only other members of the club are multiple Draco Centauros.

Main article: Madou Monogatari: Chaotic Final Exam
As the mysterious masked headmaster, Satan arranges the final exam which Arle is partaking in. When he is encountered on the 7th floor, his identity is revealed, as he forgot his mask. After his defeat, Arle must battle Rulue, who is dismayed by Arle's treatment of him.
This appearance seems to be referenced in Puyo Puyo 7, where Satan tells Ringo that he was once the headmaster of another magic school, but he doesn't think anybody else remembers.

- True Madou Monogatari and Madou Monogatari Chronology
Main article: True Madou Monogatari
In the True Madou Monogatari Chronology timeline, he was once known as Lucifer. He fell in love with a human mage named Lilith, and rebelled against heaven to be with her, taking his wings and his old name away. In the context of this timeline, being the creator of the rebuilt Madou World, he is one of the only major Compile-era characters to remain the same individual through all of their appearances.
Puyo Puyo (1992)
In Puyo Puyo (1992), Satan tries to make a dramatic entrance, but it is ruined when Arle mispronounces his name as "Santa." He later states that creating traps for Arle to navigate is his hobby.
The English version is the first game to change Satan's name to Dark Prince. He attempts to convince Silvana to join him; when that fails, he lays out the Black Kingdom's plan for intergalactic domination.
Puyo Puyo Tsu and Super Nazo Puyo 2
In Puyo Puyo Tsu and Super Nazo Puyo 2 he puts on a golden mask to make Arle and Rulue think he was "Masked Satan". Arle was not deceived by the lame disguise though. He had modified his tower into a rocket as a back up plan. The only way to get "Masked Satan" is to Beat the Stages without using Continues and get over 180000+ EXP.
Puyo Puyo Sun
In Puyo Puyo Sun, Satan blew up the size of the sun with magic in order to sustain a perpetual Summer and be surrounded by ladies in bikinis, including Draco Centauros, who was enjoying Satan's change in the forecast. Arle and Schezo Wegey, however, were less than impressed by his efforts, and quickly trotted of to his castle to thwart his plans.
Against Arle, he is quickly blasted by a Fire spell of hers, while Schezo uses his sword not to cut him down, but to singe off his hair, to which Satan laments the fact that he now has a bald spot. In Arle's ending, he's knocked out cold: in Schezo's ending, he beats up Schezo, much to the latter's discontent.
Puyo Puyo~n
Throughout Puyo Puyo~n, Satan was brainwashed by Doppelganger Arle after he accidentally released her from a black box in order to obtain Carbuncle and battle Arle. He was freed later by Arle and can't remember anything for what he did. For the first time, he is only the penultimate opponent and not the final one.
Puyo Puyo Box
He sets up a chase for Arle in the Quest mode. He spreads 6 medals needed to enter the Happy Tower across the land. Once Arle has assembled them, he reveals himself as the grand prize of the Happy Tower and is the final boss, as usual. Arle rejects his offer for marriage, and he is also abandoned by Carbuncle as usual. In Scramble mode, he either fights with OPP rules in 10 man mode in his Tsu outfit, Yon rules in 20 man mode with his Yon design, or Tsu rules in 30 man mode as Masked Satan. He is always the final opponent.
Minna de Puyo Puyo
In Minna de Puyo Puyo, Satan was once again after Arle's love, so he crafted a ticket for two to a fancy hot springs made of gold and splits it into five runes. Arle was sent on a wild chase to recover these runes and find Carbuncle, who had wondered off to Satan's Castle. After Arle recovered the runes and pieced them together, she threw away the ticket, wondering why anyone would invite her to the hot springs, and leaves Satan to cry.
Puyo Puyo! 15th Annniversary
In Puyo Puyo! 15th Anniversary, Satan joins the tournament in order to use his wish to force Arle to go on a honeymoon with him. However, he mistakenly wishes to teach the magic school students some manners instead, much to the dismay of Satan. He is implied to be one of the six meteorites in the game's intro.
Puyo Puyo 7
Satan becomes one of the playable characters in story mode who can fight Dark Arle. He is also one of 3 characters (not counting Skeleton T's transformation) whom hardly changes at all when transforming in Puyo Puyo 7. The dialogue even jokes at this, when Suketoudara tells Satan that a rumor states he doesn't change at all. Only the length of his horns and the color of his wings change. In the DS version, other minor changes in tint can be seen as well.
He appears in the Area 51 stage in Act 3. With Ringo and Amitie mistaking him as an alien (with Amitie calling him Stan at one point), he accuses them as brats, and tells them they deserve a trip to Puyo Hell, and challenges them to a Puyo match.
When Ringo is warped to Primp Town, Satan hears the commotion between her and Arle, and joins Ringo in freeing her from Ecolo's mind control, meeting Maguro and Risukuma along the way. He later joins the main trio in the final battle with Ecolo.
Puyo Puyo!! 20th Anniversary
Satan's story follows his search for Arle to bring her to the castle he built for their honeymoon. While he is unsuccessful, he is persuaded at the end of his route to team up with Ecolo in their plan to grant everyone's wishes.
Puyo Puyo!! Quest
- For this character's stats in Puyo Puyo!! Quest, see PPQ:Satan.
Satan is available as a green card in this game, added on November 28, 2013. He is available in Magic Stone Gacha in limited periods only. He is in the same series with Possessed Klug, Accord, Ecolo, and Dark Arle, having similarly distributed skills and stats.
Puyo Puyo Tetris
As Satan is explaining why the two worlds are colliding, He is immediately blamed for the worlds colliding by Arle, after which he engages in battle with her as punishment, and loses. Eventually he is found again by both Ringo, and Tee, the latter of which he gets hostile at by the mere mention of being Arle's friend. Eventually after a brief battle, He begins a rematch out of pure anger, but is immediately calmed down by the return of Arle, and after explaining the situation to her and her friends, stays behind to help rebuild Primp Town. At the ending of the story, He and Ecolo create a portal from the edge of spacetime to their S.S. Tetra, allowing the Tetra's crew to be able to visit Ex at anytime.
Puyo Puyo Chronicle
At the beginning of the game, he is whisked away by an unknown force. This turns out to have been staged much later into the adventure, as he confesses to Arle and her party that he orchestrated this adventure so that Arle could both rescue and defeat him. After Rafisol appears, he and Ecolo give Rafisol the ability to exist independently without destroying everything. He is among the final characters to join before the endgame alongside Ecolo, Onion Pixie, and Ragnus the Brave.
Puyo Puyo Tetris 2
In chapter 3-5, Satan finds Arle and his friends looking for him. He is happy to find Arle and Carbuncle while offering his help. Indeed, Arle wanted to know more about the situation of the merger between the Puyos and the Tetriminos by asking Satan. He replied that the "Dimensional Parasite" is stupid and that its only goal is to preserve the rules that control the worlds, not caring about the rest. Then, Satan tries to force Arle to accept his help in his adventures with his friends, followed by phrases of love, but Arle, feeling unwell, wants to teach Satan "a good lesson". After the fight, Arle is victorious and Satan admits to the team that he and Ecolo were able to catch the "Dimensional Parasite" (which is actually Marle) by distracting them. Marle was able to escape and Satan pushes Arle to catch up with her. In chapter 5-3, Satan surprises Arle in the middle of a conversation to propose a fight "burning with all the passion" he feels for her. After a fusion fight, Satan is victorious, informing that he has held back much of his strength. Arle doesn't understand the message he's trying to send. He says that no one has the potential to take on Squares except him "obviously" (He wanted to show the superpowered strength that Squares had). Marle, thinking Satan was going to hurt her, begs not to hurt him. Satan replies that he will see about that later. We can find Satan in chapter 3-S4 winning thousands of leaves of Lemres thanks to his indications; in chapter EX-8, Squares tries to make amends for the acts committed with the help of Satan.

Puyo Puyo Drama CD
Satan plays a major role in multiple drama CDs, namely Volume 1, Volume 4, and Volume 6.
Miscellaneous
In Puyo Pop (N-Gage), his sprite is used for the Gatekeeper, the final boss who presumably guards the exit of Puyoland.
In a Disc Station animated short, Satan wakes up to find himself tied up and in a Puyo Puyo game. He jumps off when a pair of Puyos bounce towards him, and just as he lands safely in the Puyos, a pair of red Puyos connect with another two in the field, starting a chain that leads to an All-clear, ultimately making Satan dropping to the bottom of the playing field.
Name Change
Satan is referred to as the "Dark Prince" in almost all English localizations, including the English translation of the first arcade game, the Neo Geo Pocket Color Puyo Pop, the Game Boy Advance Puyo Pop, Puyo Puyo Tetris, Puyo Puyo Champions, and Puyo Puyo Tetris 2. While not directly named in the Puzlow Kids version of the first game, he is alluded to as the Dark Prince in its ending. The digital instruction manual for 3D Puyo Puyo Tsu calls him Satan in one instance (as this version is an unlocalized port of the Japanese arcade game), but uses Dark Prince everywhere else in the manual. The unlockable costume based on him in Puyo Puyo 39! also carries the Dark Prince name in the English version. The Puyo Puyo crossover event in Sonic Runners and the manual of SEGA AGES Puyo Puyo 2 are the only instances in which Satan is used without also referring to him as the Dark Prince.
In keeping consistent with this change, Masked Satan becomes Masked Prince in the Neo Geo Pocket Color Puyo Pop, the G Satan Castle becomes the Dark Prince Castle in the GBA Puyo Pop, and Yellow Satan becomes Onesie Prince in Puyo Puyo Champions.
Trivia
- Although Satan's birthday is unknown, Puyo Puyo Puzzle Pop celebrates May 20th as the day he first met Arle. May 20th is also the release date of Madou Monogatari II: Arle 16-Sai , a remake of Madou Monogatari II.
- Satan is replaced by Dr. Robotnik in Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine, King Dedede in Kirby's Avalanche, and Spirtl in Qwirks.
- According to Kazunari Yonemitsu, director of Madou Monogatari 123 and one of the creators of Puyo Puyo, Satan and Schezo Wegey were modeled after characters from the novel Night's Master. While not explicitly confirmed, Satan was almost certainly based on Azhrarn, the Prince of Demons. Coincidentally, one potential translation of the book's Japanese title is "The Dark Prince".
- Although his characterization seems to have changed in recent games, Compile-era’s Satan used to love “Carbuncle-chan” obsessively, having his castle decorated with Carbuncle goods everywhere and owning countless Carbuncle dolls (Madou Monogatari SS, Puyo Puyo~n, Puyo Puyo Box, Hasamuncho), and often being distracted by Carbuncle rather than Arle (Arle's Adventure, Waku Waku Puyo Puyo Dungeon) or wanting nothing from her but that she return his pet to him (Arle Manyuuki).
Alternate Voices
- In Puyo Puyo!! 20th Anniversary, his voice become a bright and strong tone.
- In Puyo Puyo Tetris, his voice become a high, calm voice. There are a lot of changes in chants compared to other characters.
- In the English version, he speaks in falsetto.
- In Puyo Puyo Chronicle, he is whispering.
- In Puyo Puyo Tetris 2, Satan's alternate voice is similar to the one heard in the original Puyo Puyo Tetris, though he sounds slightly more energetic.
- In the English version, most of his alternate voice clips are reused from the original Puyo Puyo Tetris, and his new voice clips retain the same tone.
