Sig is a spacey boy, first introduced in Puyo Puyo Fever 2. Although he is sometimes shown smiling, he lacks emotions through his text, and acts passively toward things, save for his great fascination with insects. His lack of emotion in his speech lead to assumptions that he has some problems emoting. According to Puyo Puyo Fever 2, he is descended from a demon but is ignorant of his origins. His left eye is red and his left hand is a large red claw, denoting his demonic heritage. He is also the secondary antagonist of Puyo Puyo Puzzle Pop alongside Meena.
Biography
Personal History
Little is known about Sig's background, but he apparently looked normal before the beginning of Puyo Puyo Fever 2, and his appearance only changed shortly after he transferred to Primp Magic School.
Appearance
His most distinct features are his heterochromia and red left arm, which come from his demonic origins, and are said to have occurred slightly before the events of Puyo Puyo Fever 2. His eyes are blue and red, his left eye being red. Sig has sky blue hair, with hair antennae that seem to be prehensile.
In Puyo Puyo Fever 2, he wore a white and blue high-collared jacket with what seems to be an orange brace, and dark blue pants and blue shoes. Light blue ankle socks peek from his shoes. He also carries a large bag on his waist, with the school's wing-shaped emblem clipped to it.
In Puyo Puyo 7, his outfit is a lighter-colored version of the boys' Suzuran school uniform. He keeps his waist bag.
In Puyo Puyo!! 20th Anniversary, he wore a dark blue and white-sleeved t-shirt with a beetle on the front. His pants are a lighter shade of blue, with a white stripe around his knees. His shoes are now white and blue with green soles.
Personality
Sig is often described as a boy that goes along life at his own pace. He doesn't show a lot of emotion, rarely raising his voice, treating everything nonchalantly, and speaking in a somewhat monotone voice. He's also rather absent minded, often failing to catch sarcasm or treating metaphors literally.
One of the things that motivates him is his love for bugs. Starting with Puyo Puyo! 15th Anniversary he would often be accompanied by bugs and his motivations would often involve bugs. In particular he's often accompanied by a small ladybug that he loves dearly, to the point he shows fear if it's attacked, such as when Witch wanted to use it as a potion ingredient in Puyo Puyo!! 20th Anniversary. In Puyo Puyo Tetris, after Schezo corners him, Sig reveals that he keeps a family of bugs in his left arm. Because Sig believes that Schezo is going to take his hand, he requests some time to say goodbye to the bugs.
The Other Sig
Another, separate entity from the usual Sig has emerged twice and taken control of his body. Once in Sig's Secret, in response to a power-up potion that Witch crafted and gave to Amitie, and again in Puyo Puyo Puzzle Pop when Meena borrowed some of Sig's powers. Sig's Secret describes him as having darker hair than the usual Sig, two red eyes, and a much harsher voice. Although these physical differences are not shown in Puyo Puyo Puzzle Pop, his voice is drastically different. He goes unnamed in both appearances and refuses to be called by Sig's name. However, when he is controlling Sig's body, Sig is still conscious and can observe and remember everything he does.[3]
His personality is callous and cruel, and he is ruthless in trying to accomplish his goals. The first time he attempted to unseal a box in the Ruins of the Seal in Sig's Secret and the second time he attempted to acquire more power to take over the Dream World in Puyo Puyo Puzzle Pop.
He seems to recognize the power resting in Amitie's red Puyo hat, but the actual implications of this are still unknown. Due to the stark difference in demeanor, he appears to be distinct from the alternate costume Dark Sig that was introduced in Puyo Puyo!! 20th Anniversary.
Abilities
His magic derives from Blue Magic, and as such, all his spells are based on shades of blue, and blue-colored objects or concepts. His attacks include Teal, Acid, Zenith, Cyan, Paraiba, Asmalte, Robin's Egg, Lapis Lazuli, Celestial and Hydrangea, although in the English translation of Puyo Puyo Tetris and Puyo Puyo Tetris 2, Hydrangea is replaced by Cobalt. He also has Cerulean and Lapis Lazuli in Puyo Puyo!! 20th Anniversary.

Relationships
- Accord
- Ms. Accord is Sig's teacher at Primp Magic School, her other students being Amitie, Raffina, Klug, and Lidelle. She has implied that she knows about the reason Sig's red arm and eye are the way they are, but has never talked about it, always avoiding the question.
- Amitie
- Sig gets along well with Amitie, and is often seen interacting with her more than other characters. Amitie tends to be supportive of Sig, as shown in the novel Sig's Secret, where she worries for his well-being after he unexpectedly quits the cafe preparation. In Puyo Puyo Tetris, he helps her initiate a battle with Raffina when she's out of breath. After her victory he insists she rest after thinking she was about to faint, and she thanks him for watching her after finally giving in. When Amitie brings up a memory of Sig to battle in chapter 6, she mentions that she's always wanted to tell him something, but the Sig of the past interrupts her, saying that she should tell the real Sig (in the Japanese version of this scene, she states that her hat reacts strangely whenever she's around him). In Chapter 9, Sig trusts Amitie enough to ask her to protect him from Schezo, who is looking to take his left hand. In Puyo Puyo Chronicle, Amitie becomes shocked to hear that Ally holds adoration for Sig, but calms down after Ally clarifies that she adores Sig's love for bugs.
- The Crimson Spirit
- Sig is the bearer of the cyan soul, which the Crimson Spirit is seeking out to recover its true power. When Sig confronted Possessed Klug in Puyo Puyo Fever 2, Possessed Klug asserted that Sig's body was definitely that of his descendant. In the Japanese dialogue, he stated that Sig's body is undoubtedly the one who inherits his blood. However, the Charm of Kumamori given to Sig by Akuma prevented Sig's soul from resonating with Possessed Klug's.
- In Chapter 9 of Puyo Puyo Tetris, the spirit inside the Tome of Sealing began to chatter right after Sig had ran past Klug, further strengthening the implied connection between the two.
- Although Sig has never acknowledged the spirit's presence, he dislikes being near Klug's book and tries to avoid it.[4]
- Klug
- Despite Klug's rudeness towards everyone, Sig seems unbothered by, ignores, or simply doesn't notice Klug's condescending attitude and constant mockery of him and the others. Both Klug and Sig share a connection to the Tome of Sealing in Puyo Puyo Fever 2 & Puyo Puyo!! 20th Anniversary, where the spirit within the Tome of Sealing possesses Klug after being unsealed by him in the former and makes it clear it recognized Sig as its other half in both games, with Klug even confirming this. When Klug crossed paths with Schezo in Chapter 9 of Puyo Puyo Tetris, he withheld information about Sig's whereabouts, showing concern for him and asking if Schezo was bothering him. However, he did tell Schezo about Sig & the spirit in his tome being connected. In Sig's Secret, when the Primp Festival begins after Sig returns to normal, Klug and Raffina wear cyan-colored aprons and look after him, much to his surprise.
- Raffina
- Most of Sig and Raffina's interactions include Sig getting Raffina's name wrong (i.e.: Ragamuffin, Waffina), much to her dismay. Raffina believes Sig's arm became red due to strength training, and was surprised to learn otherwise. In Puyo Puyo Tetris, when Raffina was acting mysteriously due to the influence of the two worlds fusing, she had mentioned an 'unusual energy' dwelling inside Sig, curious as to why he had not submitted to the chaos. He simply stated that people don't like chaos. In Sig's Secret, when the Primp Festival begins after Sig returns to normal, Raffina and Klug wear cyan-colored aprons and look after him, much to his surprise.
- Lidelle
- Mysteriously enough, Lidelle seems to always notice Sig's spirit floating by him, which pops up on occasion. This is likely because of her heightened senses compared to the other characters. When addressing it, Sig appears to have no idea what she's talking about, promptly leading to a Puyo battle between the two, for one reason or another. During Chapter 9 of Puyo Puyo Tetris, Lidelle hesitated to tell Schezo Sig's whereabouts when asked, worrying for his safety.
|
- After mistaking Meena for an undiscovered species of insect, Sig befriends her when she asks to borrow some of his power to make everyone's dreams come true for a short period of time. Sig obliges, although he does not fully understand her goals, and it is this borrowing of his power that awakens the other Sig and allows him to hijack the Dream World for a short period of time.
- Although she's at fault for putting him and his friends in danger, Sig forgives her because she never had any ill intent from the start. The two separate at the end of the game as her powers weaken, but they promise to always be friends.
- Ocean Prince
- Ocean Prince frequently uses Sig as his servant, this began as a running joke in Puyo Puyo Fever 2 where Salde promised him 3 meals a day, naps, and walks if he were to become his servant. Sig eventually forgot what the rest of the deal was, but seems to have happily gone along with whatever Salde needed during the game's HaraHara course.
- Lemres
- Sig seems to dislike Lemres, usually finding him suspicious as he immediately attempts to leave several times after first meeting him, and leaves him to fend for himself after winning the Puyo battle against him. In Puyo Puyo!! 20th Anniversary, Sig was annoyed with him because he scared bugs away from his lures. Despite this, Lemres has shown concern for his safety, as well as implying he also knows something about his red eye and arm while keeping the information secret.
- Schezo
- Similarly to Lemres, Sig wants nothing to do with Schezo, with Chapter 9 of Puyo Puyo Tetris involving him running away from him constantly, as Schezo claims to want his power. Lemres warns Schezo that the two should not cross paths, even in a dream.
Trivia
- His birthday is June 16th, the same day as Possessed Klug, which is believed to be the original number of the beast.
- His specialty is sleeping with his eyes open.[1]
- His least favorite thing are ghosts.[1]
- Sig is one of the few characters who is not generally symmetrical. As a side-effect, he is given 2 different sets of art, one for facing left and one for facing right.
- The name "Sig" is a Nordic given name used in real life. Due to the Nordic naming tradition of taking half of the father's name and half of the mother's name to name a child, "Sig" is also included in many names of Scandinavian origin, such as Sigmund.
- In Japanese versions of Puyo Puyo games, Sig does not use a personal identifier. This detail was also specified in the Puyo Puyo 25th Anniversary book, where everyone's personal identifiers are listed.
- The other Sig does use the personal identifier 我 (wa) and it is in fact the same one that the Crimson Spirit uses. However, the other Sig's is written in hiragana and not in kanji.
- The red coloration of Sig's left hand and eye may be a reference to the relationship between evil, misfortune, and the directional left observed in some cultures and religions. It may have also originated from the Latin "sinister", which means "left".[5]
- His alternate costume Debug Master Sig was designed by Twitter user ミドリ as part of a design contest Sega held to commemorate Puyo Puyo!! Quest's tenth anniversary.[6]
- His alternate costume Allstar Academy Sig depicts him with a deck of insect-themed trading cards. These are most likely a reference to the card game Mushiking the King of Beetles, which was also developed by Sega.
- Sig's spell and repeater, Hydrangea and Acid respectively, seem to be linked in his blue color scheme as reference to hydrangeas turning blue when grown in acidic soil. He's likely intended to represent the acidic end of the pH scale, with Possessed Klug (who shares the spell Hydrangea in his red color scheme) representing the basic, or alkaline, end of the pH scale.
- In the English localization of Puyo Puyo Tetris and games following it, the spell Hydrangea is instead replaced by "Cobalt", likely referencing the actual element cobalt in extension to the color, cobalt blue. As demonstrated by how Cobalt II chloride changes from blue to red when it interacts with water and is slightly acidic.
- However, Acid is localized as "Acid Wash", essentially losing its connection to his ultimate spell.
- In the English localization of Puyo Puyo Tetris and games following it, the spell Hydrangea is instead replaced by "Cobalt", likely referencing the actual element cobalt in extension to the color, cobalt blue. Alternate Voices
- In Puyo Puyo!! 20th Anniversary, he speaks in a higher voice than usual, and his laughter can be heard.
- In Puyo Puyo Tetris, the syllables are filled with many permutations of (Shi) and (Gu) (except for match start quotes from Swap rule).
- This joke is eventually reused for an alt in Puyo Puyo!! Quest, appropriately named Shigushigu Sig.
- In the English version, his tone becomes more emotional.
- In Puyo Puyo Chronicle, his pronunciation of the chants becomes an interrogative form.
- In Puyo Puyo Tetris 2, his voice becomes childlike, reminiscent of his Mini Puyo Fever voice from Puyo Puyo 7, but with a softer tone. He shares this motif with his fellow magic school students Amitie, Klug, Raffina and Lidelle.
- In the English version, he sounds more prepubescent and has more swagger, talking like a game show host.
- In Puyo Puyo Puzzle Pop, his voice in both languages is deeper and more aggressive than his usual voice.
