Dark Arle is the one of the main antagonists in Puyo Puyo 7. She is actually Ecolo possessing the real Arle's body, using her in order to achieve their goal of widening the space warp.
Biography
Appearance
Dark Arle shares the same physical appearance as her normal form, with the differences coming from her clothing. She wears a long, layered dark blue robe with white and orange accent lines separating a dark gray border as the bottom layer. The top layer consists of a dark blue and grey hoodie-like article with orange lines, and two gray and powder blue layers hang down from under the hoodie. On top of the hoodie she wears a round, light blue gem with a yellow bezel and an orange strip of cloth hanging from it, reminiscent of the normal Arle's breastplate from her designs before Puyo Puyo 7.
Her boots are the same as the normal Arle's, and her hair and eye color remain unchanged. In Puyo Puyo 7, her eyes lack the typical highlights, but she is seen with them in Puyo Puyo!! Quest.
When entering Transformation, the color of her clothes change depending on the mode she enters; in Mini Puyo Fever, her clothes shift to a green palette, and in Mega Puyo Rush, they shift to a red palette. However, in both modes, the colors of the white and orange accent lines as well as her gem and ribbon remain the same. Otherwise, she receives no drastic changes such as in size or apparent age, possibly due to being temporarily possessed.
Personality
When possessed by Ecolo, Arle's personality changes significantly. She has a cold aura, often laughing mysteriously. She is highly mischievous and likes to have fun, and is overall a troublemaker. She also gains a deeper voice, which can change to a combination of both Arle's and Ecolo's voices, as seen during the climax of Puyo Puyo 7.
Arle manages to break free of the possession and return to her normal personality one time, as seen in Puyo Puyo 7 when Ringo meets the normal Arle in Primp, mentally resisting Ecolo for long enough to explain what's going on.
Abilities
In Puyo Puyo 7, she shares the same abilities as her normal self, such as Bayoen and Fireball; however, her spells' effects are altered slightly, often having their color palettes changed to blue or purple. For example, when she performs Bayoen, the flowers around her are altered from their usual orange and yellow colors to purple flowers with evil faces. In Puyo Puyo!! Quest, her active skill is called Espiegle, although it is not seen in any of her other appearances.
Relationships
- Klug
- During episode 10 of Arc 2 in Puyo Puyo 7, Klug tells Ringo and company that he heard about a solution for the flood of Puyos from "Arle," which is that they need to defeat 7 opponents in each of the parts of Earth, indicating that "Arle" told Klug a false solution to the problem and that he believed her.
History
Puyo Puyo 7
Dark Arle gives Klug a false explanation as to why Ringo's world is overrun with falling Puyos, and a false solution to the problem, which he passes on to Ringo and company. This successfully tricks Ringo and her party into defeating 7 opponents one by one, with the last one being Dark Arle herself. After being defeated at Stonehenge, Dark Arle reveals that beating her and the other opponents has actually widened the space warp more, which will cause Ringo's world to be completely submerged in Puyo. Later, Dark Arle appears again, but Satan manages to discover the one pulling the strings, telling Ecolo to stop the act. Upon hearing this, Dark Arle's voice turns into a hybrid of normal Arle's and Ecolo's voices, then finally into Ecolo's own voice.
Ecolo explains to Ringo and Satan that their possession of Arle was only "traveler's mischief" and that they needed her for his special plan, but expresses disappointment that she was able to mentally resist them at one point, causing their plan to fall apart. They tell Ringo that they are willing to give back Arle if she beat them in a Puyo battle. Ringo accepts, and upon her defeat in Act 4, Dark Arle reverts back into normal Arle. Ecolo finally reveals themself afterwards, and does not possess Arle again.
Gameplay-wise, Dark Arle first appears at the end of Act 2's cutscene after Klug tries "explaining" the situation. She is battled once in Act 3 and once again in Act 5. Dark Arle can be unlocked by beating Act 5 with both Ringo and the alternate character Satan.
In game, Dark Arle plays with the concept of alternate characters like Masked Satan, Pierrot, and Red Amitie: while she has an identical dropset to her normal state, her chaining power is distinct. Her animations are based on that of her parent character, and her voice clips (except for being selected, entering fever, and winning) have the same dialogue, but have different inflections.
Puyo Puyo!! Quest

Dark Arle is available as a purple card, added on March 31 2014. She is available in Magic Stone Gachas as well as ticket gachas. She is in the Boss!? Series along with Possessed Klug, Ms. Accord, Satan and Ecolo, having similarly distributed skills and stats.
Trivia
- In Transformation rule, Dark Arle does not transform. Instead, the color of her robes changes to either red or green in Mega Puyo Rush or Mini Puyo Fever respectively.
- She is the spiritual equivalent of Doppelganger Arle. However, they are entirely unrelated, other than being an evil alter ego to Arle.
- Dark Arle's battle theme, however, has pieces that resemble Doppelganger Arle's battle theme, resonating with other Puyo Puyo~n refrences scattered throughout Puyo Puyo 7.
- As of now, she is one of the only characters that debuted in a Sega-developed game to not appear in later games as a playable character, not including Puyo Puyo!! Quest.
- Dark Arle was planned to appear in Puyo Puyo!! Touch alongside some other characters, according to datamining of the game's files, but she was never added to the game because of its discontinuation.
