Puyo Puyo!! Quest information | |
Squares is the true antagonist and final boss of Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 who brainwashed Marle and had her amass power for him. He was created by Marle after she felt lonely watching over the worlds on her own, and she sees him as a younger brother.
He was tasked with ensuring that the universes were right and orderly, but when he sees Marle obsess over the Puyo and Tetris universes being merged, he chose to make everything "right", by his definition, once more. Squares brainwashed and absorbed Marle's power. He only stopped once Marle showed him a 'fun and orderly' battle, having explained that his original vision of the worlds could never come to fruition, as the worlds are ever-changing.
Biography
Appearance
Squares appears to be a pale-skinned young man with dark blue hair, gold eyes, and a cyan-tipped cowlick. He wears black gloves, white pants, heeled shoes, and a black robe which appears to separate into several smaller squares towards the bottom, and the inner part of his robe is red.
While using his powers, Squares’ appearance changes in a few ways. His hair grows longer and begins to flow freely, the cyan tip takes up more of his cowlick as it assumes a lightning bolt shape, and - if his power is strong enough - rings will appear in his eyes. During the animation for Cosmic Rectangle, his hair gains a purple gradient at the ends and begins to spin, and his cowlick is completely cyan.
Personality
On the surface, Squares appears to be a cold and pragmatic person who cares about little else besides ensuring that the order of the universes is upheld. In reality, he is rather immature, narrow-minded, and hates change. He only cares about keeping order because he feels like that is what he is meant to do and what will make Marle happy.
Despite his appearance, Squares still has the mentality of a child, as he has not existed for nearly as long as Marle. His childish behavior manifests in him being very close-minded, clingy towards Marle, opposed to change, and prone to emotional outbursts. Despite his actions and behavior, Squares has a positive relationship with Marle and regrets what he did to her and to the rest of the cast, acknowledging that his actions were the result of his confusion and inexperience.
Abilities
As one of the watchers of the worlds, Squares has similar powers to his older sister and creator Marle. The two of them watch over the worlds together, and Marle mentions that the two of them were responsible for separating the Puyo and Tetris worlds in Puyo Puyo Tetris. He is powerful enough to take hold of Marle's mind and wipe her memories, and was able to steal the power she had amassed during the early chapters of Puyo Puyo Tetris 2. However, the extent to which he could have used this power was not seen in game, though he threatened to erase the main characters from existence several times.
In contrast to Marle's circular-themed spells, Squares' spells are named after parallelograms or related concepts. During battle, his spells are Tetrahedron, Harmonic Box, Adamantine Cube, Dark Rhombus, and Cosmic Rectangle.
Relationships
- Marle
- Marle is Squares' creator and older sister. Despite everything he's done, he cares deeply for her and simply wishes to make her happy.
- Ex
- Ex sees his own past in Squares and cares for him as seen in the extra scenario of Puyo Puyo Tetris 2. Ex comes to Squares's aid when he is given visions of his past by Ecolo. Ex advises Squares to make peace with his past and to accept his mistakes, lest Ecolo take advantage of Squares's past regrets.
Trivia
- He has a cubic motif, representing Tetris. In contrast, his creator and sister Marle has a circular motif, representing Puyo Puyo.
- According to Utako Yoshino, the writer of Puyo Puyo Tetris 2, Squares looks older than Marle because Marle subconsciously desired a friend who could support her when she felt discouraged.[1]
- Squares’ alternate voice in both English and Japanese has him sounds more youthful and energetic, with the former bearing resemblance to Tee's English voice.
- His alternate voice is used for the opponent in stage EX-5 of Adventure Mode.
- Squares was not revealed in official Japanese Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 media until the game's Japanese release (December 10, 2020), likely to avoid spoilers. However, the Western release date (December 8, equivalent to December 8-9 in Japan Standard Time) and Squares' appearance in the collaboration campaign with Puyo Puyo!! Quest (begins December 10 with preview announcement on December 9) defeats the spoilers prevention purpose.
- Squares is one of the only characters where one of their cut-in’s are missing part of their design, namely his “heavy damage” cut-in is missing his cowlick. However, on all the games files related to that cut-in, the cowlick is visible.
- Squares, like Lemres, has an asymmetrical design, but throughout all games he appears in, Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 and Puyo Puyo Quest, he does not get additional artwork.
- Squares used to have spell cut-in animations that lagged the game, however this is no longer present in the current version of the game.
- The same was true for Ally, Jay & Elle, Sig, Klug, Satan, Ai, Risukuma, Maguro Sasaki, Lidelle, Sonic the Hedgehog, and Ocean Prince.
