Serilly, romanized as Seriri before the official English release of Puyo Puyo Champions, is a mermaid that lives in a lake. She is a good friend of Owlbear, and is Suketoudara's love interest, although she is oblivious to his crush on her. Additionally, she has a shy and nervous disposition, stemming from belief in a legend that states that eating the flesh of a mermaid will grant one immortality.
Biography
Appearance
Serilly is a young teenage mermaid with blue hair, green eyes, and a long blue fish tail. In lieu of human ears, Serilly has fish fins on her head. She wears a white top which has changed from a bikini top in her original appearances to a top resembling a camisole in newer games. In some games, she wears gold jewelry in the form of a necklace or bracelets.
Personality
Serilly is a nervous girl who is quick to tears. She tends to assume the worst of people because she is afraid that people want to eat her to gain immortality. However, she desperately desires to make a friend in spite of this fear.
Abilities
As a mermaid, Serilly can swim and breathe underwater. She seems to be unable to traverse on land and is sometimes carried around in a tub such as in Puyo Puyo Chronicle. In one of the animated shorts, she's also been shown to be a talented singer.
Relationships
- Arle Nadja
- Serilly and Arle's friendship is on positive terms. In Puyo Puyo~n, Serilly tags along with Arle after she and her party agree to be her friends, and in Minna de Puyo Puyo, where after a misunderstanding of Arle wanting to eat her, says that she can visit anytime.
- Schezo Wegey
- While they don't interact much, if at all, in most games, in Waku Waku Puyo Puyo Dungeon, Serilly doesn't wish to fight Schezo, who agrees to the sentiment, instead asking if he can be her friend. If Schezo agrees, she's incredibly happy at the fact she made a new friend, and if he says no, she cries, yet Schezo retracts his words and says that he'll be her friend, though in both responses, he states he doesn't know why he cares about her.
- After the "boss" fight, they seem to be on good terms, as Serilly is happy to see Schezo if he decides to see her throughout the game, with Schezo somewhat returning the sentiment, even if he's unsure why he feels that way. This is also seen in the manga adaptation of Waku Waku Puyo Puyo Dungeon, where she saves Schezo from an attack from Suketoudara, even if Schezo has to save her directly after carrying her out of the water in a bridal/princess carry, much to Honey Bee's and Suketoudara's dismay.
- Suketoudara
- Suketoudara and Serilly are good friends, with Suketoudara harboring a crush on her, yet Serilly is completely oblivious to it. This is shown in Puyo Puyo~n, where Suketoudara states that they were supposed to go on a date, but Serilly says that she just sees him as a good friend, leading to Suketoudara becoming so shocked that he turns into stone for a comedic gag.
- Harpy
- In one of the animated shorts, Harpy tries to teach Serilly how to sing "properly", leading her to destroy Serilly's voice.
History
Puyo Puyo Tsu
She was referred to as Uroko Sakana Bito (うろこさかなびと, lit. Scaly Fish Person), while in the Madou Monogatari games this term refers to Merrow. She resides on the second floor.
Puyo Puyo~n
She appears as the seventh opponent Arle faces. She fights Arle, assuming the latter intends to eat her afterward. When her defeat doesn't bring this, she joins Arle's group for the rest of the game, with Arle advising her to trust people more to make more friends, but later hurts Suketoudara's feelings and gets him to attack Arle afterward. When Dragon escapes after battling him, she tries to stop Arle and Witch from arguing.
Minna de Puyo Puyo
Serilly is the third contender Arle encounters overall, and the final boss in Hamaji Forest. Feeling worried, she asks Arle if they'll play together, but the latter declines. As Arle is about to ask her for directions to the mysterious gate, she immediately assumes that she will be eaten. After being defeated, she realizes that Arle never planned to devour her and ends up giving Arle the merchant rune. Alternatively, Serilly asks Arle to revisit her anytime.
Serilly reappears as the third opponent in the Trial Labyrinth.
Puyo Puyo Chronicle
Serilly is available as a Skill Battle-exclusive character, alongside Harpy, Ragnus, Dongurigaeru and Onion Pixy. She is recruited in an optional mission in the Purplune Aqueducts.
Puyo Puyo Tetris 2
Serilly is a downloadable character in Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 in the February 4, 2021 update along with Yu and Rei, Strange Klug, and Rafisol.
Other Spinoffs
Serilly appears in Waku Waku Puyo Puyo Dungeon in all three routes, serving as the main boss of Water Paradise on the 10th floor. Curiously, in Schezo's route, you do not properly fight her, and instead it's replaced with a question prompt of her asking Schezo to be her friend after he says he doesn't wish to fight her, as she doesn't seem like an enemy. However, regardless if the player says yes or no, the boss fight will not occur.
Serilly also has her own spinoff game released via Disc Station, Serilly's Happy Birthday.
In one of the animated shorts also released through Disc Station, Serilly starts to sing, which attracts everyone in the area, including Harpy. Harpy attempts to teach Serilly how to 'sing properly', which ruins Serilly's beautiful voice.
Trivia
- The source of Serilly's fear is the Japanese folktale Yao Bikuni, which claims that a priestess who ate the flesh of a mermaid gained everlasting youth and longevity.
- Serilly is one of the few characters from the first two games whose preview window label does not directly match up to their real name (like Lycanthrope, Sasori Man and Mamono). Her abbreviation is MERM, presumably for "mermaid."
- In Puyo Puyo Box, Tsu Serilly (referred to as Uroko Sakana Bito) retains this abbreviation while Yon Serilly does not.
- Serilly's chants in Puyo Puyo Chronicle and Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 may be intended to reference Puyo Puyo~n. However, she does not have Arle's voice pattern, which renders the reference incomplete.
- While Serilly has consistently been voiced in Japanese by Haruka Yoshimura since Puyo Puyo!! Quest, her voice sounds different between installments; in Puyo Puyo!! Quest and Puyo Puyo Champions, her voice is slightly deeper and calm, akin to how Serilly sounded in the Compile era; in Puyo Puyo Chronicle and Puyo Puyo Tetris 2, her voice is higher-pitched, and is significantly lighter and softer. The English dub of Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 reflects this change, with her sounding calmer than in Champions.
- Alternate voice notes:
- Serilly's alternate voice in Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 has her sounding more loud and finessed, akin to Ess alternate voice.
- In the English version, her voice is higher pitched, and her lines are spoken as if through water.
- Serilly's alternate voice in Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 has her sounding more loud and finessed, akin to Ess alternate voice.
