Rei is the twin brother of Yu, who usually backs up what she says. He was missing in Puyo Puyo Fever, but appears in its sequel, Puyo Puyo Fever 2. Rei is the opposite of Yu; while his sister is excited and playful, he has more of a reserved, gloomy personality.

Biography

Appearance

Like Yu, he has a wispy tail and wears a white hooded ghost sheet—almost identical to Yu's garb, the subtle difference being his straight-cut ribbon. Appearance-wise, what mainly sets Rei apart from Yu is his blue hair, which covers his eyes.

Personality

In sharp contrast to his sister, Rei is quiet and terse. He mainly sits in the background, letting Yu be the driving force of their antics. He mostly utilizes signboards in Puyo Puyo Fever 2 to communicate to the player and to other characters, seldom speaking. According to game documentation, however, Rei had a very different personality when he was alive. This is known from trivia given in Popoi's shop in Puyo Puyo!! 20th Anniversary and one of the drama CDs.

In the English version of Puyo Puyo Tetris, his personality is rather closer to that of Yu, and his voice sounds louder; this was changed to reflect that of the Japanese games in Puyo Puyo Tetris 2.

Abilities

Rei has been known to cast Blue Wisp Come On, Testament, Reincarnation, and Heavy Haze on separate occasions, however he does not call out the name of Testament. His capabilities on his own are not very well documented, as he is almost never seen without Yu.

Relationships

Yu
Yu is his twin sister, and they usually appear together as a comedy duo. He hopes the two of them stay together forever. However, he does not necessarily enjoy it when Yu attempts to kill people, recognizing their desire to live and questioning if she understands.

Yu & Rei's Story

Yu and Rei, as a team, participate in the Puyo tournament for the chance of winning a wish-granting medal. For the majority of the tournament, he does not speak. When he does, he's mostly chiming in with Yu's statements. His wish is to exchange bodies with Yu, but gets cancelled out by his sister's wish, which was for the same thing.

Rei appears with Yu in a number of drama CDs, most notably Volume 2, Volume 4, Volume 7, and the 25th Anniversary Drama CD. Yu and Rei's backstory is explored in Volume 7 in the track "Yu and Rei's Lingering Regrets?". Their living personalities were shown in this track through a vision Feli has.

Trivia

  • Rei's name is a play on the Japanese word for "ghost"; combined with Yu's name, it makes yūrei (幽霊).
  • He and Yu share the same birthday, June 9th, and the same blood type, AB.
  • Rei's character color in Quest is blue, but all of his cards are associated with Yu, who is purple. Him being blue can most easily be seen in any cutscene involving him: instead of having his nametag and talk bubble be purple, they are blue.
  • Alternate Voice notes:
    • In Puyo Puyo Chronicle, his voice become slightly bigger.
    • In Puyo Puyo Tetris 2, he switches places with Yu and adopts a more energetic personality. This references his character when he was alive, as evidenced by he still being the one who performs Blue Wisp Come On.
