Puyo Puyo Puzzle Pop ( ぷよぷよパズルポップ , Puyopuyo pazuru poppu) is an Apple Arcade exclusive game for iOS, iPadOS, macOS and tvOS released on April 4th, 2024. It follows Amitie and her friends in a new adventure after being pulled into the Dream World by the mysterious creature Meena.

Story

After waking from a mysterious dream, Amitie discovers herself in the World of Dreams. This is just the beginning of a whimsical journey, unravelling the mysteries and magic of this realm, while winning Puyo Matches to find a way to break free and return home!

Gameplay

Puyo Puyo Puzzle Pop is an action-puzzle game with a variety of modes and features. All of the different rulesets can be played solo or with local multiplayer on the same screen. It also offers local and online multiplayer between compatible Apple devices, but mobile devices are unable to crossplay with Mac.

Adventure Mode

Adventure Mode uses a map system similar to Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 but with 3D models and artwork similar to the style of Puyo Puyo Chronicle.

On the Adventure Mode map, the player progresses by defeating opponents in Puyo Puyo matches with varying challenges. The game is episodic, similar to Puyo Puyo!! 20th Anniversary where each character in the game's roster has their own episode, but only some characters have an episode classified as a "main story". Characters who do not have a main story must have their side stories unlocked by using a side story key, which is obtained by playing through the main story. Extra challenge stages can be unlocked by completing a character's episode. Adventure Mode also offers the "Challenge Adventure", a random set of eight battles for each character that unlocks exclusive rewards.

Support Items

Support Items can be used in Adventure Mode with a variety of effects. Up to three items can be equipped per match. They can be obtained by beating battles in Adventure Mode, through daily and weekly Rewards, or from daily login bonuses.

Chain Booster	When clearing a Chain of 2 or more, boosts the number of Garbage Puyos sent to your opponent. Note: Can be used more than one to boost its effect, though the game doesn't mention it.
Simultaneous All Clear Booster	When you get a Simultaneous All Clear, boosts the number of Garbage Puyos sent to your opponent. Note: Can be used more than one to boost its effect, though the game doesn't mention it.
Quick Bomb	Boosts the number of Garbage Puyos sent to you opponent, but also boosts your drop speed.
Opening Dump	Drops a Garbage Puyo on your opponent’s board at the start of the game. *Use more than one to boost its effect.
Garbage Rain	Drops a Garbage Puyo on your opponent’s board every few seconds. *Use more than one to boost its effect.
Garbage Coating	Drop Hard Puyos on your opponent’s field instead of Garbage Puyos.
Garbage Puyo Guard	You receive fewer Puyos at a time. Note: Can be used more than one to boost its effect, though the game doesn't mention it.
Garbage Cap	Limits the Garbage Puyos that can drop on you to one row at a time.
Garbage Eraser	Wipes away all your Garbage Puyos before you lose a match. *Cannot be used alongside certain items. (Specifically, Garbage Swapper)
Garbage Swapper	Turns all your Garbage Puyos into colored Puyos before you lose a match. *Cannot be used alongside certain items. (Specifically, Garbage Eraser)
Garbage Point Increaser	Decreases the number of Garbage Puyos sent to your opponent, but you gain more Puyo Points upon winning.
Standard Point Increaser	You receive more Garbage Puyos at a time, but you gain more Puyo Points upon winning.
Slowdown	Decreases the speed of your Puyo drops.
Rotation Lock	Prevents the opponent from rotating Puyos.
Tri-Color Limiter	Only three different colors of Puyos will drop onto your field. Note: Can’t be used with Five Point Increaser.
Five Point Increaser	Five different colors of Puyos drop onto your field, but you gain more Puyo Points upon winning. Note: Can’t be used with Tri-Color Limiter.
Autoplay	Moves some Puyos for you automatically. Activate using the AUTO button. Note 1: Will automatically drop 8 Puyos at a time when activated, but can be canceled at any time. Note 2: Autoplay enters a cooldown when all 8 Puyos drop or is canceled.

Online Multiplayer

Puyo Puyo Puzzle Pop offers a variety of ways to play with others online. All rulesets are available in free matches. However, Puyo Puyo 2 and Puyo Puyo Fever rulesets can also be played in ranked matches, where players will be given a ranking based on their performance. Leaderboards showing the top 100 players of both ranked modes are available, as well as the top 100 players of the Endless Puyo, Endless Fever, and Tiny Puyo challenge modes.

Greeting Stamps

Greeting stamps are text-filled bubbles that can be used to communicate with others on the waiting screen for multiplayer matches. They can be unlocked through Adventure, Challenge Adventure, or by purchasing them from the Shop. The player can equip only 5 stamps at a time. Below is a list of available greeting stamps:

Puyo Card

Similar to Puyo Puyo Champions and Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 which featured customizable icons, the Puyo Card is a customizable feature that allows a player to freely select two titles, a background, a card frame, a badge, and character artwork to represent themselves in online play.

Chain Simulator

Main article: Chain Simulator

The Chain Simulator allows the player to place down Puyos in a set pattern to create and practice chains. The player can then save a certain pattern, and share it with a QR Code.

Photo Mode

Photo Mode allows the player to freely arrange characters, change their expressions, and change the background and add text bubbles with the game's manzai demo system.

Development

Pre-announcement

Prior to the game's formal announcement, series producer Mizuki Hosoyamada tweeted that he had one more announcement for the day following a Puyo Puyo!! Quest livestream.^[2] Shortly after he posted this, the trailers and store pages for Puyo Puyo Puzzle Pop were announced on Twitter and other social media outlets.

Pre-release

The game was first formally announced on March 12th, 2024 in a Tweet from the Twitter account puyopuyo20th.^[3] Based on early images and the initial announcement trailer, the game appeared to have individual routes per character similar to Puyo Puyo! 15th Anniversary and Puyo Puyo!! 20th Anniversary. The overworld system was reminiscent of Puyo Puyo Tetris 2's adventure mode, but styled in 3D similar to Puyo Puyo Chronicle. The first characters shown in these early trailers and images included: Arle, Amitie, Ringo, Sig, Maguro, Carbuncle, Draco Centauros, Lemres, Klug, Raffina, and Feli, and Suketoudara along with several characters exclusive to Puyo Puyo!! Quest returning as icons.

On March 17th, 2024, a demo of the game was available to play at the Puyo Puyo Grand Prix 2024 Finals.^[4] Developers at this tournament stated that the game would be updated on a roughly monthly basis.

On March 21st, 2024, it was revealed that the game would have 9 characters at launch: Suketoudara, Arle, Ringo, Maguro, Feli, Klug, Amitie, Raffina, and Lemres, with the final playable roster totaling to 24 characters.^[5]

On March 24th, 2024, the new character Meena (メエーナ) was officially named. The same post also confirmed that the story would be fully-voiced, and characters' individual stories would have to be completed before they could be used outside of story mode.^[6]

On March 26th, 2024, the new "Photo Mode" where players can freely choose backgrounds and arrange and pose the characters was previewed.^[7]

On March 27th, 2024, a tweet showcased the "My Puyo Card" (マイぷよカード) system which allows players to customize an ID card with special titles, backgrounds, and characters.^[8]

On March 28th, another promotional video was released for the game which gave a closer look at the different game rules, online play, Lesson Mode, Endless Mode, Photo Mode, Adventure Mode, My Puyo Card, game updates, and confirmed that new modes would be added in future updates along with new characters.^[9] The game's Japanese website was updated the same day with short introductions for the playable characters. Meena's voice actress, Asami Hotori, was also first shown in this website update along with her own announcement on Twitter.^[10]

Post-release

The game ranked #1 on the Japanese App Store on April 5th, 2024.^[11]

The first game update was announced on April 21st, 2024 and released on April 25th, 2024. It included Schezo and Ms. Accord as main stories, Draco, Lidelle, Risukuma and Ally as side stories and added a new Adventure Mode map called the "Challenge Adventure". The new game mode Pair Score Attack was added along with 7 new music tracks.^[12]

The second game update was announced on May 13th, 2024 and released on May 16th, 2024. It added Puyo Puyo, Puyo Puyo SUN, Mega Puyo Rush and Non-Stop Fever as new game modes, along with Challenge Mission Puyo and Challenge Practice as new challenge modes. 3 new music tracks were also added.^[13]

The third game update was announced on June 23rd, 2024 and released on June 27th, 2024. It included Rulue, Ecolo and Dark Prince as main stories, and Witch, Ocean Prince and Yu & Rei as side stories. It also added the Chain Simulator game mode, along with 6 new music tracks.^[14]

The fourth game update was announced on July 14th, 2024 and released on July 18th, 2024. It added Foursight, Active, and Quartet as new game modes, along with Endless Mega Puyo Rush as a new challenge mode. 2 new music tracks were also added.^[15]

The fifth game update was announced on August 26th, 2024 and released on August 29th, 2024. It included Sig as a main story, Carbuncle and Rafisol as side stories, and a final chapter for the main story titled "The Grand Finale". Meena was also added as a reward for beating the main story campaign. 7 new music tracks were added, alongside quality of life improvements.^[16]

The sixth game update was announced on September 16th, 2024 and released on September 19, 2024. It added Dig, Frozen, and Spinner as new game modes, along with 2 new music tracks. ^[17]

The game's soundtrack was announced on Septeber 23rd, 2024 and released on October 24th, 2024.^[18]

Cheats

Unlock All: At the title screen, hold L1 + R1, and press Up, Down, Right, Left, Square, Square, Triangle, Triangle (PlayStation controllers only); hold L + R, and press Up, Down, Right, Left, X, X, Y, Y (Nintendo Switch controllers only). A bell chime will play if the code is entered correctly. This code unlocks all characters, items, Puyo Titles, and any other collectables that aren't available in the shop. The game will also give you 100,000 Puyo Points. This code can only be inputted with a controller.

Note: This code was added to the game in version 1.6.0.

Trivia

This is the first Puyo Puyo game to feature Mission Puyo in the style of the Nazo Puyo series in Adventure Mode.
The game's official Japanese abbreviation is "Puyo Pop" (ぷよポップ) by official Japanese developers and news sources, but it is not to be confused with Puyo Pop or Puyo Pop Fever.
- While not official, "Puyo Papo" (ぷよパポ) is also used by Japanese fans.
The game's logo is notably in English with a Japanese subtitle. According to Mizuki Hosoyamada, this was done to follow the example of the Sonic franchise which targets a global audience.^[19]
With the addition of Meena as a playable character, Puyo Puyo Puzzle Pop is the first game since Puyo Puyo 7 to have an odd number of playable characters.
Despite the game saying that characters are unlocked by completing their Adventure Mode episode, they are actually unlocked by unlocking their episode instead.

Bugs

When version 1.1.0 released, there was a bug that showed the information for Rulue's Challenge Adventure in the player stats screen, despite her not being playable at the time. As of version 1.2.2, this has been fixed.
