Risukuma is a third year at Suzuran Junior High who first appeared in Puyo Puyo 7. He was formerly a member of the chemistry club, but after he caused an explosion that destroyed the chemistry clubroom, he joined the physics club with Ringo and Maguro.[1]
Biography
Appearance
By far the most striking feature is his bear and squirrel characteristics. His head is a distinctive hybrid of a bear and squirrel with a small yellow patch of hair on top of his head. His hands and feet are bear paws, so large that he doesn't wear any footwear as a result. Aside from that, his attire consists of a blue turtleneck sweatshirt, a lab coat, and jeans.
Personality
Risukuma has two primary characteristics: The first being that he is a love connoisseur that gives love advice, philosophizes about love, and judges people's compatibility. However, this passion for love can cause him to come off as somewhat creepy. His second trait is that he loves science, but this passion sometimes causes him to become too fired up, leading him to destroy objects and disregard others' safety for the sake of pursuing science. In spite of his quirks, he is not completely oblivious to others and will gladly comfort them, especially his friends Ringo and Maguro.
Abilities
He tends to explode objects using his flasks. A bizarre quirk is that his attacks are "I love you" in different languages, including English, Korean, Italian, Chinese, French, and Hawaiian. In English versions of Puyo Puyo Tetris, his spell theme consists of words related to the concept of "love" in increasing intensity, such as Tenderness, Infatuation, Passion, Enchantment, and Devotion.
Relationships

- Risukuma is Ringo's senior and clubmate. He's frequently seen with her and Maguro, and often does his science experiments in the physics clubroom.

Puyo Puyo 7
Risukuma makes his first appearance in Puyo Puyo 7. Three months before the events of the game, the chemistry club room blew up after an experiment went wrong; he is now in the middle of renting the physics club. The explosion apparently caused Risukuma to look how he does now.
After Ringo is transported to Primp Town, Risukuma is later found being controlled by Ecolo, albeit from a distance, and being able to speak for himself unlike Arle. During this, his voice takes on a more low and eerily calm tone than usual. Ringo quickly comes to the conclusion that he's being controlled, and starts a Puyo battle with him, after which he's released from Ecolo's control.
If you play as Satan against him, Ringo instead forces him do the battle for her, like with Maguro.
If you play as Maguro against him, Risukuma explains the situation to him and asks for his help. Maguro shortens his name to "りせぱ" (Risepa), which causes him to make a noise of pain-- perhaps trying to break of Ecolo's control for a moment-- before letting out a roar, and the two start the battle. After this, Risukuma isn't seen again until the epilogue.
Puyo Puyo!! 20th Anniversary
Risukuma appears in the introduction of Puyo Puyo!! 20th Anniversary. After an experiment blew up, he, along with Ringo, Maguro, and Ecolo are sent to Primp Town.
According to the Puyo Puyo!! 20th Anniversary official website, his "Unscientific Matter Detector" beeped at him, showing that he is not scientific. After that, he exploded a flask, and broke the "Unscientific Matter Detector."
Risukuma's Story
In his story, Risukuma has set up a "Life of Solace and Security Consultation Corner" in Primp Town to help people with their issues.
Ringo
Risukuma's first opponent is Ringo, who advertises his services in the first place. She expresses her concerns about the value of something as unproductive as popping Puyo. Risukuma suggests that she reverses that way of thinking; if popping Puyo leads her to experience a feeling of emptiness, he says that she should instead try to "pop Puyo so fervently as to paralyze her brain tissues." She asks him for a Puyo battle to test it.
After the battle, Ringo realizes that Puyo battles let her have fun, and that is something to be valued.
Amitie
Risukuma's second opponent is Amitie. She finds him while he's in the middle of singing, him explaining that it's his "Life Consultation Corner's overture." Amitie says that she has a very serious problem, but waits for him to finish his song (though, she isn't quite sure what an overture is). Eventually, she gets impatient, and interrupts him with a Puyo battle.
Afterwards, he asks her about her issue, and she says that she forgot after that battle, which she considers a relief. She leaves, much to his dismay.
Lidelle
Risukuma's third opponent is Lidelle. He tells Lidelle to let him know if there's something she wants to discuss, and to not be shy. Though, Lidelle's stuttering and stammering over her words frustrates him, and he says that if her issue is her overwhelming shyness, personality is impossible to change, and she should never leave her room. Understandably, this upsets her, and Risukuma tries to shoo her off. After a Puyo battle, she continues to try to say something after the fact, which irritates him. He throws an explosive flask at her in an attempt to get her to leave, which succeeds.
Donguri Gaeru
Risukuma's fourth opponent is Donguri Gaeru. He asks the "round one" of his worries, which causes a long series of ribbits, of which Risukuma seems to be able to understand. He says that his solution would be to "sleep packed in a box while floating the ocean waves," which Donguri Gaeru seems to find satisfactory, and starts a Puyo battle as thanks.
Maguro
Risukuma's fifth opponent is Maguro. Maguro states that he loves digital and analog games equally, and goes on to explain that after all this time, due to the prevalence of video games, gamebooks and the like have died out to become collector's items, sold for high prices in auctions. Maguro says that rather than preserving these for himself, he would rather they be circulated so that children can have fun with them, going on to explain his own experiences with staying up late at night to play a "T&D" campaign, "Ice Mountain Magicians," is an experience that can only be possible with the imagination of a child's. He says that digital games have their strengths, but the imagination and once-in-a-lifetime experiences with analog games are superior. With the prices of analog games skyrocketing and becoming collector's items, Maguro feels that the experiences he treasures has been stolen from children.
After a full two minutes without stopping, Risukuma cries uncle, saying there's nothing he can say toward all this, and instead starts a Puyo battle. Maguro feels better having gotten that off his chest, which Risukuma is glad about. Maguro says that he hopes they can do this again sometime, and leaves, after which Risukuma says that he hopes otherwise.
Raffina
Risukuma's sixth oppoent is Raffina. After being asked, Raffina claims that her worries are never-ending. She says that she wants to become the world's most beautiful, then to obtain every jewel in existence, and to live life full of freedom, peace of mind and the best of friends. She adds that she would also like to have a stable life, but to simultaneously have a intense and passionate romance, to party without a care and to satisfy her "intellectual thirst" with books after, and a blissful life, admired by all and envied by none.
Risukuma says that her strong character is admirable, in a way (which she takes as a compliment), but he cannot give a solution to her high list of demands. She says that he's useless, before starting a Puyo battle as a diversion, and leaves, Risukuma in shock.
Draco
Risukuma's seventh opponent is Draco. He asks her of her worries, but with the sudden question, she can't think of anything. Risukumasays he doubts this, saying that existence in itself brings relative troubles, as ople seek out ways to give meaning to their lives. This causes Draco to try and rack her brain for any troubles she may have, and eventually thinks of... the fact that she's hungry. This, obviously, leaves Risukuma in disbelief, but that doesn't stop Draco from starting a Puyo battle as a distraction. After the fact, she's disappointed that this does not, in fact, solve her hunger, and goes off to actually find food, leaving Risukuma confused.
Schezo
Risukuma's eighth and final opponent is Schezo. At first, Risukuma is glad that Schezo is upfront, but quickly realizes that is not the case, when he says that he's in persuit of Arle and that he wants to take her magic, even if he has to use force, and asks Risukuma to "pin her down next time he sees her." Risukuma tells him that he should be more direct when confessing his love, and Schezo says that's wrong, and that he just "wants her." Risukuma tries to correct him and tell him that "wanting her" doesn't mean what he thinks, but Schezo interrupts him, and instead battles him. After the fact, Schezo leaves, dramatically declaring that "he'll remember this."
After all of this, Risukuma decides that he's listened to many concerns for the day, so he's done until next week.
Other Characters' Stories
Ringo
Risukuma appears in Ringo's story as her sixth opponent. She and Maguro find him rampaging and shouting. Ringo asks him what the matter is, and he explains that being utterly lost has left him hopeless, causing him to lose his composure. To calm him down, Ringo challenges him to a Puyo match. After the fact, he's calmed down, the three of them finally reunited. After, him, Ringo, Maguro and Amitie find Arle, who talks about having seen Ecolo. Risukuma doesn't remember them after the events of Puyo Puyo 7, and Ringo explains to him afterwards.
After battling Arle and Ecolo, Ringo expresses worry about Ecolo, and after Amitie suggests they stay, she asks how Maguro and Risukuma feel about the matter. Risukuma suggests that "we should ponder our options thoroughly and carefully."
Schezo
Risukuma appears in Schezo's story as his third opponent. He finds Risukuma conducting experiments in his cave (announced with a loud BOOM). Risukuma seems unaware that someone else was there, saying that the atmospheric temperature and humidity of the cave is perfect for experiments. Schezo challenges him to a Puyo battle, and after winning, forces Risukuma out of his cave.
Rulue
Risukuma appears in Rulue's story as her fourth opponent. Rulue mistakes him for a stuffed animal, and suggests using him as a subsitute for Satan that she can cuddle and talk to as she falls asleep. Still thinking he's an inanimate object, she calls him cute and introduces herself to him, and asks who his owner is. He speaks up at this point, saying that he's not a stuffed animal, and says that her love-filled speech moved him. She accuses him of pretending to be a stuffed animal to eavesdrop, and he tries to tell her that it's a misunderstanding, but she starts a Puyo battle as punishment. After the fact, he says that he felt love flowing through each punch, and she tells him to get lost before she turns him into a punching bag. After the threat, he runs off.
Feli
Risukuma appears in Feli's story as her fifth opponent. He offers her help with her love problems, but she ignores him, and attempts to gift him to Lemres as a pet. Obviously, he is not okay with this, to which she responds with infuration. She starts a Puyo battle with him, after which he flees.
Ocean Prince
Risukuma appears in Ocean Prince's story as his fifth opponent. Seeing the prince makes him crave boiled fish, remarking on how Maguro occasionally gifts him fish, and that it's his favorite food. Ocean Prince fends him off with a Puyo battle, after which he flees.
Maguro
Risukuma appears in Maguro's story as his sixth opponent. He asks what him and Ringo were up to, to which Ringo explains that they were testing the effects of his "beauty beam," after which Risukuma requests to see it, too, since it's been awhile. Maguro declines, saying that he's done for the day, after which Risukuma offers to tell him a secret of his in exchange. They do a Puyo battle, which Risukuma is disappointed in losing. Ringo says that it's dangerous for him as well, but Risukuma says that he's wearing a special barrier; contact lenses. Understandably, Maguro is confused at the fact that he owns them.
After which, Risukuma asks Maguro how Ringo is unaffected by Maguro's eyes, and Ringo says that since they've known each other for so long, she isn't all that impressed. After the two battle, Risukuma remarks that he can see love in their battles, and quietly leaves the two be.

Puyo Puyo Tetris
Risukuma is first seen after the crash of the SS Tetra, interested in the starship. Ringo, Maguro, Tee and O find him, Ringo introducing the two to each other. Risukuma directs them toward Ai and Zed, referring to them as "a trembling chihuahua, walking upright," and "the most exceedingly out-of-shape-robot ever." He joins the other four in investigating to observe. While the main group go in search of Jay & Elle, Risukuma is introduced to Ai, leading to the duo working on repairing the SS Tetra.
The two’s combined intelligence leads to large progress on ship repairs, but unfortunately they require parts from space to finish. Ai has Risukuma explain that the Tetra's flight capabilities are now severely limited, and that they need to get the remaining parts from in the sky, and gives Ringo a note explaining the details. Ai continues, saying that the starship can no longer hold much fuel or water, and suggests that they go up in pairs.
Risukuma is not seen again until Chapter 8, a Suzuran Dream, where he is paired up with Ess for the Suzuran Shopping District Talent Show, who has the idea of ‘dismantling’ Risukuma. He doesn’t take this idea too well, leading to a Swap battle to try and keep himself in one piece. He tires Ess out with the battle, and dispenses her a glass of juice through his paws, when she complains that she wants one.

Trivia
- Risukuma was originally planned to be a yellow magical girl that was the daughter of a florist or a baker, but he was changed to a boy during the planning stages of Puyo Puyo 7 since the designers felt that there were already a large number of female characters in the series[3].
- Risukuma's name is a play on words. His name is a contraction of risu and kuma, which literally means "squirrel bear". His form in Mini Puyo Fever shows evidence for this, giving him a squirrel tail. His name is also a portmanteau of "risuku" and "kuma", and "risuku" or "risk" may be a nod to his personality.
- Risukuma's voice actor, Kenichi Ono, previously voiced Satan in Puyo Puyo~n.
- Ringo and Maguro often call him "リスせんぱい" or "りすせんぱい" (Risu-senpai). Puyo Puyo 25th Anniversary Book also romanizes his name as "Risu Senpai."
- Ringo often addresses him as "Ris" in the English version of Puyo Puyo Tetris.
- In Puyo Puyo Tetris 2, Risukuma has an unused manzai demo artwork.
Alternate Voices
- In Puyo Puyo!! 20th Anniversary, he sounds robot-like, similar to Ai's Japanese alt. voice in Puyo Puyo Tetris. The post-match dialogues make him even more robot-like.
- In Puyo Puyo Tetris (both of the Japanese and English versions), he sounds deep and snarly like an actual bear.
- In Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 Japanese Dub, he sounds suave and very human-like.
- Most English Alt. Voices are borrowed from Puyo Puyo Tetris.
- In Puyo Puyo Chronicle, the voice pitch is similar to that of Puyo Puyo Tetris but sounds more evil.
- In Puyo Puyo Puzzle Pop, he retains his human-like voice from Puyo Puyo Tetris 2, except it's lower.
- His English alt. voice makes him reminiscent of Christopher Walken.
