Draco Centauros (also known as Doraco and Draco-Centaur; often shortened to "Draco") is a half-dragon and half-human girl who claims to be Arle's rival. She is capable of breathing fire and also appears to be adept at hand-to-hand fighting. A recurring element of her character is an obsession with beauty contests.

Biography

Appearance

She is a green-haired humanoid girl with pointed ears and draconic traits such as horns, wings, fanged teeth, and a long tail. She is given reptile-like slit pupils in some art syles. In most games, she wears a red qipao over thin black pants that expose her ankles. She usually sports long white gloves, though some depictions opt to give her fingerless gloves instead.

Like many recurring Puyo Puyo characters originating from Madou Monogatari, details of Draco's design has been modified several times. One such trait is the size and color of Draco's wings. Most depictions of Draco prior to Sega assuming development duties give Draco large red wings. However, as part of her redesign in Puyo Puyo~n (which also sees her losing her black pants for more baggy wear), she is given small green wings. Puyo Puyo 7 gives her large brown wings, but her depiction in Puyo Puyo!! 20th Anniversary and beyond uses small green wings.

Personality

Draco is an energetic, loud, and vigorous young girl. She is highly competitive and is often looking for new rivals. Draco considers herself a powerful fighter, and while this is true, given that her AI in Puyo Puyo Tsu is relatively strong, her AI in present Sega games is notably weak.

Similar to Arle, Draco has a tomboyish attitude. This is best shown by her eating habits, where she often gets hungry and tries to eat other creatures such as Onion Pixie. However, unlike Arle, Draco doesn't look down on typical feminine interests.

Draco's most notable trait is her passion for beauty contests. Her biggest dream is to earn beauty pageant victory, so more often than not, she calls herself a "cute girl". Draco's love for contests is reflected in her speech, where she mixes up Puyo matches and beauty matches. She's also rather fond of making puns on beauty contests. This is shown in Puyo Puyo Chronicle where she says that the party is in the venue of "the beauty pageant's final round", much to Schezo's annoyance.

Draco is generally friendly to others, but also has a tendency to playfully tease people. Due to her carefree nature, she is rarely focused in a serious situation, and based on her interactions with Rulue and Schezo, she doesn't get along well with adults. Draco can also be quite mischievous, often getting herself into trouble be it accidentally or deliberately. Due to the above statements, Draco is often called out for being immature, much to her irritation.

Although she cares deeply about her goals, Draco rarely displays vanity or selfishness, unlike Rulue. While she is not above calling herself "pretty" or "cute", Draco tends to put other people before herself.

Abilities

Despite her techniques not utilizing magic more often than not, Draco is an exceptionally talented and dangerous combatant thanks to her mastery of hand-to-hand fighting combined with her draconic abilities.Puyo Puyo~n sees her throwing roundhouse kicks, tail slaps, and rising punches (Draco Upper); later games give her rapid-fire punches (Draco Special/Dragon Claw) and the seemingly-magical Great Fire. Other techniques using in Puyo Puyo matches include Dynasonic/"Hear me roar!" and Burning Breath/Dragon Tail. In True Madou Monogatari Volume 4, at one point she uses Draconic Typhoon: this ability returns in Puyo Puyo Tetris as her Big Bang attack.

Relationships

Arle Nadja
Draco has a one-sided rivalry with Arle, with the magic student being the recipient of most of Draco's challenges. (And frequently emerging as the victor of said challenges.) The two appear to be on friendly terms regardless.
Lidelle
Draco and Lidelle share some common traits, namely their green hair and horns. This connection is emphasized in Puyo Puyo!! 20th Anniversary, where the two meet and Lidelle refers to Draco as her sister. This continues in Puyo Puyo Chronicle where Lidelle continues to refer to Draco as "Big sister". Draco plays along and acts as an older sister to Lidelle.
Rulue
Draco dislikes Rulue when she cuts in on Rulue's monologue in Puyo Puyo!! 20th Anniversary.
Schezo Wegey
Schezo seems to dislike Draco, as shown in their very few interactions in Puyo Puyo!! 20th Anniversary and Puyo Puyo Chronicle. In the former, he lashes out on Draco for touching his water, while in the latter, he gets irritated by her lack of seriousness. It is unclear whether Draco dislikes Schezo back or not.
Witch
Draco and Witch appear to be friends, interacting fairly frequently with one another, but Draco is often victim to Witch's strange magic experiments or pursued as an ingredient in her potions.
In Satan's Space Amusement Park, the two competed against each other in a beauty contest, and in Puyo Puyo Tetris 2, Draco assisted Witch with research on mini Puyos.

History

Madou Monogatari series

Draco debuted as a random encounter in Madou Monogatari 123; the Game Gear version of Madou Monogatari III also introduces a mid-boss version named "Super Draco Centauros." In Madou Monogatari: Hanamaru Dai Youchienji, several Dracos form a Satan fan-club inside of his own mansion. She is also a party member in Madou Monogatari (Saturn).

Puyo Puyo (1992)

Draco is the first opponent that Arle encounters in the game's Normal mode. Draco challenges Arle to a contest, which Arle assumes is a beauty contest. Draco then laughs at the suggestion that Arle could possibly compete with her beauty and clarifies that their contest will be a Puyo Puyo match.

In the English version, she is known as Dragon Woman. She claims that she will defeat Silvana, unlike "those previous fools." (the Tutorial opponents).

Puyo Puyo Tsu

Draco resides on the penultimate floor of the tower. Her story scene is nearly identical to her scene in the first game, the key difference being that Arle now says Draco's lines and vice versa.

Puyo Puyo Sun

Draco Centauros serves as the player character of the game's Easy course. After defeating Skeleton-T, Harpy, and Choppun, she finds a large rock to sunbathe on; however, the heat of the rock bakes her skin and sends her flying into the air. In the first stage of the Normal course, Arle encounters a dazed and sunburned Draco. Draco tries to stand up and issue a challenge to Arle, but Draco's dizziness gets the best of her and she falls back to the ground.

Puyo Puyo~n

Draco appears as Arle's fifth opponent in the volcano stage. Arle asks Draco on the person who took Carbuncle away, but Draco, again assuming it was the fake judge of a beauty contest, challenges Arle to a Puyo match. When Arle wins, Draco grumbles she would've won it if it was a beauty contest. Then, she joins Arle in the search for Carbuncle, with her mind in making sure Arle isn't her rival in another beauty contest.

Puyo Puyo Box

Scramble mode contains, in addition to original Puyo Puyo and Puyo Puyo~n variations of Draco, an alternate Draco named "Beast Draco" whose presence is unexplained; Beast Draco uses Sun rule.

Minna de Puyo Puyo

Draco is the final opponent of the Gachinko Dungeon and also appears in Trial Labyrinth. Again, Arle assumes that Draco is challenging her to a beauty contest, but Draco replies that beauty queens are "passe" and that "girls with big horns are the big thing now." After Arle defeats her, Draco gives up the rune that she was holding.

Draco is always fought with the Hard Puyo rule. During her first fight all 5 colors of Puyo are present, and in her second fight only 4 colors are used.

If Arle defeats Draco while holding the Flame Expander, Draco explains that she had ordered the item 3 years ago; apparently, there was a mix-up at the postal service and Witch received the item instead. Draco gives up Nohoho's Rucksack in exchange for the Flame Expander.

Puyo Puyo 7

Draco returns to the series in Puyo Puyo 7. She uses Lidelle's dropset in this game. She is lured to Loch Ness by Dark Arle, who convinces her that a beauty contest will take place there.

If the player battles her as Amitie, Witch and Harpy will make brief cameos.

Puyo Puyo!! 20th Anniversary

In her 20th Anniversary story, Draco becomes interested in an "awesome swimsuit" that Arle mentions. However, after enduring a series of unfortunate incidents, Draco discovers that the swimsuit in question is one that is worn by Suketoudara.

Puyo Puyo!! Quest

For this character's stats in Puyo Puyo!! Quest, see PPQ:Draco Centauros.

Draco is available as a green card in this game, added on September 30, 2013. She is in the same series with Rulue, Arle, Witch and Schezo, having similarly distributed skills and stats.

In collaboration with the Japanese karaoke chain Karaoke Kan, Draco received an alternate costume named Spirited Draco (ノリノリのドラコ).

Puyo Puyo!! Quest Arcade

Draco was available as a playable character in this game. She is a Recover Type character.

Puyo Puyo Tetris

Draco serves as a minor character in Chapter 5. Like Suketoudara, and Witch, she has been teleported into space, due to the merging worlds. Draco attempts to “look great as a Damsel in Distress”, but only attracts the attention of O whom she promptly tries to eat, but is stopped by being defeated by him in a Big Bang match.

Puyo Puyo Chronicle

Draco is recruited during the early part of the main story when Arle, Ally, and Amitie investigate the strange stone near Grimp.

Puyo Puyo Tetris 2

In Puyo Puyo Tetris 2, Draco plays a minor supporting role.

Chapter 3-2B

In this chapter, she interrupts Ringo and Tee while the two are talking about finding Marle. After surprising Tee by roaring, she mistakes Ringo for Arle and challenges her to a battle, claiming that she'll finally prove she's more beautiful than Arle. After Ringo mentions she's not actually Arle, Draco is shocked, saying she thought she heard the sound of a Puyo battle and believed that Arle was the one battling. Ringo then gives an insincere apology and attempts to get back to the task at hand before Draco interrupts her, saying she'll battle anyone at this point as she "wants to have a Puyo battle so bad [she's] losing her mind". Ringo correctly recognizes this as meaning Draco was also corrupted by Marle, and accepts the offer to battle. After the battle, Draco seems exhausted. Ringo asks Draco how she feels, and Draco responds by saying that "[her] heart doesn't feel so wrenched up anymore". Ringo says that sounds like a win to her and Tee agrees, saying it seemed like the battle helped Draco. Ringo follows up by asking Draco if she's seen Marle, and Draco says that she has and that she saw Marle going deeper into the forest. Ringo thanks Draco for her help, and she, Tee, O and Lemres move on after Draco wishes them all luck with whatever they're doing, saying they can call her if they need her help.

She is next seen in chapter 4-P2, along with Witch

Chapter 4-P2

The chapter begins with Draco being shown to be examining Tiny Puyos. Witch comes over to her during her examining and asks what she's looking at, and Draco replies by remarking on how small the Puyos are. Witch replies by agreeing, saying that there have been a lot of strange Puyos around, but she isn't sure if Marle is responsible for them. Draco says they're cute, like "little candy bits", and Witch replies with indignant confusion, stating that they're strange and harder to work with. After a bit of thinking, Witch requests for Draco to play around with the Tiny Puyos, saying that she'll watch. Draco asks why and Witch says it's "for research" and that Draco will get some practice out of doing so. Draco responds by saying she doesn't quite understand, but will do what Witch asked of her regardless.

After the minigame, Witch remarks on how the Mini Puyos can utilize more field space due to their small size, before falling into deep scientific thought. Draco asks what she's mumbling about, but Witch ignores her and continues theorizing, saying she feels she's finally starting to get it. Draco says that all she knows is she had a good time, which Witch responds to with disdain.

Warning: The following article or section contains major spoilers.

Draco was added to Puyo Puyo Puzzle Pop's playable roster on the first content update on April 25th, 2024. Her side story focuses on her facing off in various beauty contests with other characters through Puyo battling.

Trivia

  • Her first name likely comes from the the Latin "Draco", which means dragon. Her surname may originate from the mythological figure Centaurus, who was the father of the mythological hybrid race of centaurs. While centaurs are hybrids of humans and horses, this may be a nod to her status as a hybrid of a human and a dragon.
  • Draco is the only Madou Monogatari random encounter to serve as a protagonist in a mainline Puyo Puyo title.
  • Draco does not fast drop her Puyo in Puyo Puyo 7, and her AI pattern does not change when Core AI is enabled.
    • Draco does not rotate her Puyos in any game starting with Puyo Puyo!! 20th Anniversary, regardless of Core AI or not. However, in Puyo Puyo Tetris, like O, she does rotate her Tetrominoes.
  • Draco's spell patterns are influenced by various entries of the Puyo Puyo and Madou Monogatari series as of Puyo Puyo 7, while her basic chains, fever entry, fever success, and Party recovery lines call back to Puyo Puyo Sun.
  • Excepting deliberately altered states (Transformation, alternate voices), Draco is only character where all of the uniform 18 voices (player chain, enemy attack, character select, match results and Fever) have never been changed since her debut in Sega-published Puyo Puyo games. She, Witch and Ecolo are only three characters that player chain voices (including their counter voices) have never been changed since being re-added to the cast in Sega Puyo Puyo games.

Alternate Voices

  • In Puyo Puyo Tetris, she has a high but slow voice.
    • In the English version, her tone becomes similar to that of her normal Japanese voice.
  • In Puyo Puyo Chronicle, her voice becomes lower-pitched, and more reminiscent of herself in the Compile-era.
  • In Puyo Puyo Tetris 2, she has a soft and high-pitched voice.
    • In the English version, most of her voice clips are borrowed from her English Alternate Voice in Puyo Puyo Tetris. In her few new voice clips, she sounds regal, almost queen-like.
