Puyo Puyo!! Quest information | |
Ess is the first mate of the Starship Tetra. She is the daughter of Ex and was left in the care of Zed until Ex could return to her. She is based on the S Tetrimino.
Biography
Appearance
Ess wears a white broad-shouldered dress, with gray sleeves and a gray border. Her outfit also has orange buttons and she wears white boots. Her color scheme is based on the current assigned color for the S-shaped tetrimino, which is green. This color applies to her orange headband as well as her parasol.
Personality
Ess appears cute and innocent at first glance. However, she is quite bratty and rude to others, having a rather harsh tongue and pushing others away. The sole exception to this from the beginning is her 'Papa', but on rare occasions she's willing to be more open and honest if the situation calls for it.
Abilities
Ess' spells are themed around beauty products such as Eyelash, Lip cream, Nail Gel, Foundation, and Aesthetic Magic. Her spells in the English dub are similar to her Japanese spells, like Lipstick, Face Mask, and Crystal Gel, except for Deluxe Spa Package. She is shown to maneuver her parasol quite well, using it in her attack animations and spinning it when she wins.
She is stated to be the ship's navigation officer and is apparently skilled in technical drafting according to the game's scenario writer.[1] [2]
Relationships
- Amitie
- Ess typically finds Amitie's ditziness to be irritating and claims to not get along well with her. In Puyo Puyo Tetris, Amitie stated that she and Ess became closer during their adventure, though Ess argued otherwise.
- Her relationship with Amitie improves during Puyo Puyo Tetris 2, as this is the second time the two have met and Amitie can tell that there is more to Ess than meets the eye. By the end of the adventue, Ess tells Amitie to stop crying because she's happy to have gotten the chance to meet Amitie and the rest of her friends. Even if the two of them will eventually forget each other, the time they spent together and the bond they share would remain in their hearts. Particularly, this is evident in her philosophical questioning of Amitie, which is calm and even considered love-filled unlike her initial attitude towards her, showing her tremendous character growth arc in PPT2; “if you knew from the start that we would have to part ways at the end, would you have chosen not to meet us at all just so you wouldn’t have to go through the pain of saying goodbye?”.
- Ex
- Ex is Ess' biological father, he was forced to leave her behind to be raised by Zed when he was called to become the Keeper of Dimensions. Ess doesn't recognize him as her father, to the point of getting angry at him due to his neglect in keeping the Puyo and Tetris worlds from merging. During Puyo Puyo Tetris, she gets a strange feeling that she knows him, despite not meeting him before.
- The two interact less in Puyo Puyo Tetris 2, though she's irritated with him at the beginning of the story for taking Tee without bothering to explain what was going on.
- Tee
- As Ess is the first mate of the S.S. Tetra, Ess works closely with Tee as his second-in-command. She commands the crew when he is absent, but she is occasionally annoyed by his bland personality and tendency to forget about her.
- Zed
- Ess refers to Zed as her "Papa", as he was left aboard the S.S Tetra by Ex to raise her when he had to fulfill his duties as the Keeper of Dimensions. She acts warmly towards him and admires him a lot, and gets angry when anyone questions how Zed could be her father, revealing it to be a touchy subject for her.
History
Puyo Puyo Tetris
Ess is first encountered in Chapter 1-3, when her "nap" is disrupted by Amitie's unintentional teleportation onto the SS Tetra. Ringo and Tee, hoping to find Ringo's friends as soon as possible, find Ess yelling at Amitie. A short conversation between Ess and Tee, results in a Puyo-Tetris battle between Tee and Amitie. When the SS Tetra is being invaded by Puyos, Ess teams up with Amitie to try and get rid of them.
After reuniting with Jay & Elle in Chapter 2, Ringo and Tee are led to an upset Ess at the Seaside Park. Tee challenges Ess to a Puyo battle in order to calm her down. Afterwards, Ess reveals that she was led here by a "girl with a crooked stick in each hand", who is soon revealed to be Feli, suffering adverse affects from the impending merge of the Puyo Puyo and Tetris worlds. This interaction is also the first time Ess refers to Zed as "papa".
In Chapter 3, Ess is sent into the Constellation Zone with Amitie to help repair the SS Tetra. They are tasked with "battling in lady-like fashion", leading to a Big Bang match between them, while putting on a fancy accent. Ess and Amitie quickly get tired of their "lady-like attitude", and drop it after their battle. Ess tags along with Tee, O, and Ringo to go searching for Ecolo in Chapter 5, where she gets frightened after encountering Suketoudara and battles him in a Big Bang match.
Ess has a battle against an illusion of Zed in Chapter 6. While she's excited to spar with "her papa", Zed tries to apologize for leaving her behind, while trying to explain that he's not her real father. Despite not understanding what he's saying, Ess starts to feel strange as a result of their interaction, causing her mood to worsen upon reuniting with the others.
Ess tags along with Tee, Ringo, and the others as they travel to the Edge of Spacetime to confront Ex in Chapter 7. Ess initially shows no compassion for Ex's plight, but soon reveals to Amitie that the reason she's acting this way is because she feels like she recognizes Ex, despite never meeting him before. However, she is quick to brush it off and battles with Amitie to clear away the debris blocking the way. Ess, amongst the rest of the crew, is quick to object to Tee's decision to replace Ex as the Keeper of Dimensions in Stage 7-8, unswayed by Tee's statement that "This is for Ess' sake", as she is still unaware of her true connection to Ex.
Ess shows up alongside Risukuma in Chapter 8, as the fourth act in the "Suzuran Shopping District Talent Show". She tries to reveal what's inside Risukuma by cutting off his head. Ess makes another appearance after Amitie's solo trial, where Amitie tries to prevent her from attending Yu & Rei's "Horror Hour". Ess is shown tired alongside all the other performers at the end, and gets upset with Ringo when she gets called out for not participating.
Ess recognizes Ex fairly quickly upon being summoned in Chapter 10. She tries to remember Ex's name, though her guesses, although close in a sense, gradually become less and less accurate to the point where Ex has to correct her. Ess calls him "Less of a downer", given the fix to his dilemma back in Chapter 7, before stating how happy she feels, knowing that her papa is here. However, Ex quickly realizes that Ess was referring to Zed, whom she invites him to say hi to.

Chapter 1
Ess's first appearance is in the final level of chapter one. She appears after Marle leaves, while Ringo, Tee, Arle and Amitie are wondering about Marle's true motives, interrupting the conversation to demand an explanation as to why Tee left her behind.
Amitie assumes Ess is a friend of Tee's before Ess insults Tee, saying that insulting someone is an odd way to greet a friend.
Tee states he's glad to see Ess again, and O makes a sound of agreement. Tee asks for Ess to calm down so that he can explain what happened.
Chapter 2
2-1
After Tee explains what exactly happened before Ess appeared, Ess makes a whiny grunt at Tee. Tee introduces Ess to everyone else as the "highly competent" first mate of the SS Tetra, which Ess corrects to "the super cute AND highly competent" first mate.
Tee attempts to ignore that, going on to say she's a bit opinionated before being interrupted by Amitie, who says it's alright and claims she can already tell there's more to her beneath the surface, assuming she's actually just a "lonely, sweet girl". Arle and Carbuncle both agree, while Ringo praises Ess for speaking her mind, saying "it takes guts" to do so.
Tee thanks them, while Ess is less than enthused about the analysis of her personality. Tee asks if she's angry, and Ess says she is, claiming Tee has no idea what she had to go through to find Tee.
She complains about Tee's kidnapping, her losing contact with O, and Tee's sudden appearance at Suzuran. Tee apologies for making Ess feel lonely, which Ess protests to, claiming she wasn't lonely at all, saying she needs to "knock some sense" into Tee, leading to a battle.
After the battle, Tee asks Ess if she's calm now, and Ess snorts. She claims that Tee is lucky she's "not only cute, but ridiculously generous", saying she'll forgive him "this time".
O exclaims happily, and Ess says she'll help the group find Marle, leading the group back to the S.S Tetra.
2-2
On the SS Tetra, Ringo begins singing, which Ess responds to by telling her to shut up, saying that she should show a little respect. Arle lightheartedly remarks as to how Ess had called the Tetra a tin can earlier, and states she understands why Ringo is so excited.
Amitie states that the SS Tetra is "unreal" and she's never seen anything like it, and Ringo states that it's awesome, like something straight out of a sci-fi movie. Ess expresses confusion, asking what a "shy-fly what now" is, and Ringo says to not worry about it.
Ringo asks if Ess lives on the ship, and Ess confirms this. Ringo reacts with awe, saying she wished she had his life. Ess says to herself and the others it's simply a plain old ship, but if Ringo wishes, she could show her around. Amitie reacts to this with happiness, saying Ess really is generous, which Ess is happy about.
Ess begins her tour with the room the group starts off in, the common area. She explains how it's used for meetings and, when there's spare time, training exercises. Amitie asks what type of training, and Ess says "what else" other than Tetris, leading to a battle.
After Ess wins the battle, Amitie says that it was fun, asking if Ess and the others train like that all the time. Ess says that she guesses they do, and Amitie then asks who trains the hardest. Before Ess answers, she claims that Amitie was distracting her, despite Ess being the one who made Amitie do battle with her in the first place. Amitie asks what exactly she was distracting him from, and Ess says she has a "very important hug" she has to deliver. Ess tells Tee to take over for her and runs off.
Ess does not reappear until level 2-5.
