Madou Monogatari: Michikusa Ibun (魔導物語 道草異聞 Madō Monogatari Michikusa Ibun, lit. Madou Monogatari: Strange Wayside Story) is a first-person dungeon-crawler developed by Compile. It was first released on July 15, 1994 for PC-98.
Story
Madou Monogatari: Michikusa Ibun opens with Arle and Carbuncle enjoying the nice weather while laying on the grass together. Arle decides that a day like today is a perfect time to go dungeon-crawling so she and Carbuncle set off for a nearby ruin and begin exploring.
At the end of the dungeon she encounters the Guardian, a monster who seems to be protecting something within the ruins. Once defeated, he drops an old magic book with a spell that Arle had never heard of before, "Owanimo". The "Owanimo" spell was described as being able to clear four creatures of the same color when they are together.
This game serves as a direct prequel to Puyo Puyo (1992), building off of the backstory presented in its manual.
Gameplay
Madou Monogatari: Michikusa Ibun follows the same first-person dungeon-crawler format as most other Madou Monogatari games. It resembles Madou Monogatari 3 the most in terms of gameplay, with Arle accompanied by Carbuncle for the duration of the game.
