Madou Monogatari III: Kyukyoku Joou-sama (魔導物語III 究極女王様) is a remake of the third game in the Madou Monogatari series adapted from Madou Monogatari 1-2-3. The game was developed by Compile and published by Sega in 1994 for the Game Gear, and is the third of four Madou Monogatari remakes released for the system.

Unlike the previous two Game Gear remakes which closely follow the events of the original games, Madou Monogatari III: Kyukyoku Joou-sama features a brand new original story while only retaining the opening and ending scenes of the original game.

An enhanced port of the game was released for Japanese mobile phones in 2009 by D4 Enterprise featuring upscaled sprites and new features such as a bestiary and an optional 3D smooth scrolling effect while navigating. Due to limitations of mobile phones of the time, voice samples aside from Arle's voice were removed from this version.

Story

Set three days after the events of Madou Monogatari II: Arle 16-Sai, Arle Nadja is continuing on her journey to reach the Ancient Magic School, this time accompanied by her new friend Carbuncle. While walking and considering eating lunch together, the two encounter Rulue, who demands that Arle hand over Carbuncle to her, only to be ignored until she further confronts her. Rulue mistakenly points out that because Arle has Carbuncle with her, it means that she must be engaged to Satan. Confused, Arle tries to explain to her that she had knocked out Satan and left him somewhere in Lyla's Ruins. Upon hearing this, Rulue becomes furious and calls upon Minotauros. Arle and Carbuncle flee in fear while Minotauros begins to chase them, only for them to fall directly into a pitfall that Rulue had set in place.

Upon awakening from the fall, Arle and Carbuncle are greeted by a mysterious frog who informs the two that they've fallen into Minotauros's Labyrinth. The frog further explains that he is a part of the Frog Kingdom residing inside of the labyrinth, and that to escape, Arle must reach an area called the Dark Zone being guarded by Minotauros.

Development

Screenshots of an early trailer shown off at the 1994 Tokyo Toy Show were included in the game's manual, revealing that the game's artstyle was originally much more reminiscent of the first two Madou Monogatari Game Gear remakes. The majority of staff that worked on the first two Game Gear games were involved with the development of the then-upcoming Madou Monogatari I remake for the Mega Drive, which is likely why development on the game was handled by different staff.
