Puyos, originally known as Puyo Puyo, are the eponymous creatures of the Puyo Puyo series. Puyos come in many shapes and sizes, but are always treated as mere fodder. They are also known to be edible.

Madou Monogatari series

Puyos debuted as random enemies in Madou Monogatari 123. They are found on early floors, especially in I and III. Each Puyo type has a different trait; for example, Green Puyos can be frozen with Ice Storm while Red Puyos cannot. There are also a number of Puyo types exclusive to the Madou Monogatari games, such as the Rock Puyo. Madou Monogatari: Michikusa Ibun introduces the Owanimo spell, and how Puyo fill its requirements. In later titles, such as Madou Monogatari: Tower of the Magician and Madou Monogatari (Saturn), Puyos pop as they do in the Puyo Puyo series when defeated, complete with the same sound effect.

In Puyo Puyo, the color Puyos are used as puzzle pieces, while other Puyos serve different functions; for example, Garbage Puyos serve as Puyo Puyo's garbage, while Rock Puyos are used to identify the number of incoming Nuisance Puyo.

According to information included in the home ports of the first Puyo Puyo, the titular game is actually a magic battle driven by the Owanimo spell. Puyos are used to fulfill Owanimo's requirement of four or more similarly-colored creatures.

Puyo Puyo Gaiden: Puyo Wars

Puyos are used as pilots for vehicles that their owners construct.

  • "Puyo" is a Japanese onomatopoeia used to represent the movement of a soft, gelatinous object.
  • Puyos are based on the Dragon Quest series's "Slime" enemies.
  • Puyos are known as P-Kids in Puzlow Kids, Beans in Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine, Blobs in Kirby's Avalanche,[1] and Qwirks in Qwirks.

Puyos appear in every Puyo Puyo title. Likewise, they appear in every Madou Monogatari title developed by Compile.
