Madou Monogatari II: Arle 16-Sai (魔導物語II 〜アルル16才〜 Madō Monogatari II: Aruru 16-sai) is a remake of the second game in the Madou Monogatari series adapted from Madou Monogatari 1-2-3, and by extension, the MSX2 beta version of the game that was released through Disc Station, Madou Monogatari Episode II: Carbuncle. The game was developed by Compile and published by Sega in 1994 for the Game Gear, and is the second of four Madou Monogatari remakes released for the system.

An enhanced port of the game was released for Japanese mobile phones in 2008 by D4 Enterprise featuring upscaled sprites and new features such as a bestiary and an optional 3D smooth scrolling effect while navigating. Due to limitations of mobile phones of the time, voice samples aside from Arle's voice were removed from this version.

Story

Arle Nadja, now 16 years old, was on her way to the Ancient Magic School when her wallet was stolen by a Lynx. She chases after it until the mysterious dark mage, Schezo, appears in front of her, who then drains her magical power and imprisons her inside of a dungeon, causing Arle to suffer from amnesia and forget some of her magic abilities. After tricking the Dark Dragon that was guarding her prison cell, Arle manages to escape and make her way through the dungeon. Just before reaching the exit, she encounters Millu, a strange red bird merchant that offers to trade her the Staff of Uranus in return for a jewel called the Rubelcrack that can be found inside of Lyla's Ruins. Arle agrees to Millu's offer, and after knocking out Schezo who was blocking the exit of the dungeon, she sets off to explore the ruins in search of the jewel.

Differences from Previous Versions

  • The music that plays on the game's title screen is a new remix of the title theme featured in Madou Monogatari Episode II: Carbuncle, both the MSX2 and PC-9801 versions of Madou Monogatari 1-2-3, and the Game Gear remake of Madou Monogatari I.
  • Schezo's Dungeon now consists of two floors, something that was also present in Madou Monogatari Episode II: Carbuncle. In both the MSX2 and PC-9801 versions of Madou Monogatari 1-2-3, there is only one floor.
  • After defeating Schezo at the beginning of the game, he later follows Arle into Lyla's Ruins seeking revenge and is encountered multiple times throughout the game, becoming progressively weary each time he is encountered.
