He then asks her to retrieve three parts for him (rust remover, oil, and a black box), and gives her rope to help navigate the quicksand area. After giving him these items, he can finally function once again and can be summoned with a magic ribbon (which allows him to blast open heavy doors and can attack in battle). When he and Arle reach Satan’s fortress, the duo are ambushed by Satan’s golems. Socrates fends them off, but is left beyond repair after the battle. In his final moments, Socrates asks Arle to protect the forest, and finally passes on.

Donalzo Dog

Donalzo Dog is a character from Madoushi Lulba that appears in Madou Monogatari R as an NPC. Donalzo is a dog who always seems to be barking at something. Despite his looks, he is a professional anma (traditional Japanese massage practitioner), but his tendency to get cold easily leads to his paws feeling numb, leaving him unable to demonstrate his massaging prowess and causing him to whine endlessly.

Trivia

  • Donalzo's name is a parody of Disney character Donald Duck's name. It also contains the kana donaru (ドナル/怒鳴る), meaning "bark/yell".

Gust

Gust is an enemy introduced in Bayoeen Wars, resembling a cloud with muscular human arms and small white eyes. Gust also appears in Madou Monogatari (Saturn) as an enemy.

Haagen Duck

Haagen Duck is one of many characters originating from Madoushi Lulba that makes an appearance in Madou Monogatari S. Haagen Duck is a debonair but plucky duck whom light warrior Cyber Cat bumps into on his adventure home. After a brief but rough encounter (one that results in Duck dropping the mystical Sword of Light he was carrying), Duck meets Cyber again and the two reconcile, leading Duck to tag along with the young warrior. He serves as the main comic relief of the game, sometimes getting himself into trouble while attempting to help his newfound "master." When Schezo encounters him inside of the labyrinth in Madou Monogatari S, Haagen Duck explains that he's traveling in search of a "strong guy".

Trivia

  • Haagen Duck's appearance recalls that of Disney character Scrooge McDuck.
  • Haagen Duck's name is seemingly derived from the American ice cream brand Häagen-Dazs. This is much more notable in Japanese, where Haagen Duck's name (ハーゲンダック) is only a single character off from the Japanese spelling of Häagen-Dazs (ハーゲンダッツ).
  • In the 2018 adventure game La-Mulana 2, there is a duck shopkeeper known as "Bargain Duck" who bears a striking resemblance to Haagen Duck. His description offers even more references that mirror Haagen Duck's desire to grow stronger by searching ancient ruins, and his eventual meeting with Cyber Cat and his insistence on being his follower. The La-Mulana series as a whole takes a lot of inspiration from MSX games, so the reference is more than likely intentional.

Lulba

Lulba is the main antagonist of Madoushi Lulba, an adventure game by Compile often considered the spiritual prequel to the Madou Monogatari series. Lulba is a villainous, 4.6 billion-year-old dark wizard who has been resurrected, and plans to cover the world in darkness with his army of 240 million monsters. His only opposition is the young warrior Cyber Cat and his companion, Haagen Duck. He appears in Schezo's story of Madou Monogatari S as a high-level enemy.

Trivia

  • Despite each being from different series, Lulba and Schezo share a few similarities; both share the title of Dark Wizard (Yami no Madōshi, 闇の魔導師), both have lizardmen and cyclops as henchmen, both have a “Light Warrior” counterpart that they fight against (Cyber Cat to Lulba, and Ragnus to Schezo to a lesser extent), and both are beheaded by the protagonists of their respective games.
  • The kana that make up Lulba’s name,”ラルバ”, can also be romanized into “Larva”. Larva is Latin for mask, which Lulba prominently wears. Whether this connection was intentional or not is unknown.
  • In Madou Monogatari S, Lulba's name is displayed with an "?" at the end, suggesting it might not be the actual Lulba Schezo is fighting.

Obaba

Obaba, alternatively known as Fortune-telling Granny, is an elderly fortune-telling rat originally from Madoushi Lulba who makes an appearance as an NPC in Madou Monogatari S. Obaba is described as being very sensitive to all sensations, most notably tickling. In Madoushi Lulba, she holds a key needed to free a chained up girl, but is unwilling to give it to Cyber Cat (likely due to the true identity of the girl). Only when Cyber returns after plucking a feather from a bird and tickles her with it does she finally hand over the key. In Madou Monogatari S, she aids Schezo inside the mirror, and sees great potency in him. She also loses a golden key that she asks Schezo to find for her.

Osaru

Osaru, also known as Monkey, is a minor character originally from Madoushi Lulba who also appeared in Madou Monogatari S. Osaru is a kleptomaniacal simian who often steals things from those who encounter him, and is curiously said to be a proficient Indian poker player. Unlike most other characters in Madoushi Lulba, he cannot talk, only being able to say "uki" (uki being Japanese onomatopoeia for monkey vocalizations). When first encountered in Madoushi Lulba, he steals Cyber Cat's sword, and only returns it to him after being given kaki no tane. In Madou Monogatari S, Schezo meets him in the ruins, where he is holding the key Obaba is looking for. He also can give you some of his hair, which is valuable as it helps summon a genie that grants Schezo two free level-ups.

Pascal

Pascal is a character originally from Madoushi Lulba that appears in Madou Monogatari R as an NPC. He is a philosophical raccoon with a tendency to be easily frightened, especially by those who carry swords. In Madoushi Lulba, Cyber Cat can meet him at the river bank. If Cyber has his sword in his possession, Pascal will run away, but if he does not have it, Pascal can be conversed with. After talking to him a few times and then dancing for him, he will give you a snack that can be given to Osaru.

Trivia

  • Pascal's name is a nod to the 1977 Japanese children's anime series Rascal the Raccoon.

Samurai

Samurai is a samurai robot (possibly; in his home game, he is organic) who appears as an enemy in Madou Monogatari S. He is originally from another Compile game known as Samurai King Megason Z (サムライキング メガスオンZ), an adventure game very similar to Madoushi Lulba (even being developed by the same in-house team, Monkeydo). There, he was the form of main protagonist Yoshitaka Minami whilst fused with the spirit of the ancient Samurai King in order to defeat an evil monster.

Spriggan

Spriggan is an enemy in Madou Monogatari A, resembling a muscular, mecha-like ghost with elements of a genie (blue skin, gold earrings/bracelets, pointy ears, and a wispy tail). He is originally from Seirei Senshi Spriggan, a vertical shooter also developed by Compile, where he was the player's ship and took on a more detailed and occult-inspired design. His name is derived from a creature in Cornish folklore, also called spriggan.

Trivia

  • Spriggan's design in Madou Monogatari A bears much resemblance to the character of the Genie from Disney's 1992 animated film Aladdin. Given how Aladdin debuted just a year before the release of Madou Monogatari A, and how Disney's properties are quite popular in Japan, it's likely this was intentional.

Teppouuo

Teppouuo is an archerfish with four legs, which appears to be partially made out of wood. It first appears in Bayoeen Wars as a unit that can be summoned by Arle and her opponents, and attacks by spitting water on enemies.
