Puyo Puyo!! Quest information | |
Harpy is a winged humanoid who likes to sing, even when she's talking. She was originally known for being completely absorbed in her singing, to the point that she ignores anyone that talks to her. Later games would instead give her a horrible singing voice.
She is also known for her unique AI pattern at the start of the match, she will quickly line the left and right walls of her field with Puyo.
Biography
Appearance
Harpy is a winged humanoid that wears a white dress. For reasons unknown, she is nearly always barefoot, but on rare occasions does wear footwear. She has short pink hair that is more magenta in modern games.
Personality
Harpy loves to sing, even if she is not very good at it. She believes her singing to be the best way to repay others who do good deeds for her.
History
Madou Monogatari series
Harpy debuted as a regular enemy in Madou Monogatari 123. Madou Monogatari: Hanamaru Dai Youchienji is the first game to give her a horrible singing voice.
Puyo Puyo (1992)
Harpy is the fourth opponent of Scenario mode, and is the first opponent that players who select Difficult will face. As Harpy flies around and sings, Arle tells Harpy to let her pass.
In the English version, she is known as Dark Elf and is slightly different in appearance. Aside from the fact that she no longer flies around, the cutscene is essentially identical.
Puyo Puyo Tsu
Harpy resides on the third floor. Arle attempts to talk to her, but realizes that Harpy is completely focused on singing.
Puyo Puyo Sun
Draco Centauros comes across Harpy, who has collapsed from heat exhaustion. Draco gives Harpy a drink, which causes Harpy to fly into the air. Draco believes that Harpy will sing her a song of gratitude; unfortunately, the resulting melody leaves Draco writhing in pain.
Puyo Puyo~n
She appears as the 9th opponent, and is fought at the Sky Stage.
Arle meets her singing, and Harpy asks her if she would attend her own concert while waiting for Panotty. Arle reminds her that Panotty was waiting for her too, but Harpy disregards this and continues singing.
Puyo Puyo Box
She is the second boss to have one of the 6 Medals needed to enter the Happy Tower. Harpy's singing is so awful and loud that Arle cannot approach her without first suppressing the noise. She is fought with SUN rules normally in Rally Mode, however a version of Harpy based on Yon exists that fights with Yon rules.
Minna de Puyo Puyo
Harpy appears in the stages Gold Town, Gachinko Dungeon, and Trial Labyrinth. Like in other games, Harpy stacks her Puyo on the sides of her field.
In Trial Labyrinth, however, the Puyo fall too fast for her to stack the Puyo at the top of the walls, leading her to constantly fill up the right side of her field. This creates a pattern similar to Nohoho's but a lot less effective because of the presence of 4 colors.
Puyo Puyo 7
Harpy has an unplayable cameo role in Puyo Puyo 7. She appears if the player battles Draco as Amitie.
Puyo Puyo!! Quest
- For this character's stats in Puyo Puyo!! Quest, see PPQ:Harpy.
Main article: PPQ:Manzai Demo Theater/Shiver! Songstress' Encore
Outside of the above Manzai, Harpy is part of the same series as Serilly, Ragnus, Minotauros, and Kikimora, with similar stats and skills to them.
Puyo Puyo Chronicle
Harpy is available as a Skill Battle-exclusive character, alongside Serilly, Ragnus, Donguri Gaeru and Onion Pixie. She is recruited in an optional mission in the Grimp Forests.
Puyo Puyo Tetris 2
Harpy was released as a playable character on the March 4th, 2021 update alongside Ragnus, Legamünt, and Rozatte.
Other
In one of the animated Puyo Puyo shorts featured in Disc Station, Harpy tries to teach Serilly how to "sing", thus ruining Serilly's beautiful voice.
In Puyo Pop for the N-Gage, Harpy's sprite is used twice, each with different hair color (one with green hair, the other with brown hair). The two Harpies are allegedly sisters in this game, as stated by the brunette Harpy.
Trivia
- Her AI's stacking style of creating two columns of Puyo on the field is called Harpy Stacking by the community.
- The Harpy Whistle, which fills the leftmost and rightmost columns of the field with Puyo at the start of the match, is another homage to her AI's unique stacking style.
- Her AI pattern is inherited by Yu and Rei, though they change the strategy from Harpy's version.
- In Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine, Kirby's Avalanche, and Qwirks Coconuts, Broom Hatter, and Scump use her AI strategy.
- While the English version of the first arcade game changes many of the characters' names, Harpy is the only character whose sprites are edited. She loses her wings and wears a dark-colored dress. In All About Puyo Puyo Tsu, Compile artist Soncho Sawa claims that Harpy was changed to a "Dark Angel" due to religious concerns.
- The instruction manual to the first arcade game's Mega Drive port claims that Harpy's real name is "Yoko Tamura," but this is never referenced in the games or Madou Monogatari, and in All About Puyo Puyo it is implied that it is merely meant to be a joke.
- In the PC-98 versions of the Madou Monogatari games, she had a completely different character design, resembling a traditional harpy.
- Harpy has an unused "SEGA"/"Puyo Puyo Chronicle" title call in Chronicle, being the only Skill Battle exclusive character to have one. She may have been intended for the primary roster at some point.
Alternate Voices
- Harpy's alternate voice in Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 has her having a refined singing voice. In the Japanese version, she also no longer sings constantly.
