Puyo Puyo!! Quest information | |
Nasu Grave is a bespectacled eggplant. He can't run very fast due to his stubby little legs, and thus usually bounces to get around. He has strong fear of being eaten by others, or being crushed by Zoh Daimaoh. His catchphrase, otankonasu, is often interpreted as "fool" or "potato-head". He tends to mention his name at the end of his sentences. His name is a pun on the words "nasu" (eggplant) and "Musgrave".
History
Madou Monogatari series
Nasu Grave debuted as a random enemy in Madou Monogatari 1. When using fire spells, it damages itself. In the SNES game, he is a boss battle. He was planned to appear in Madou Monogatari (Saturn) as a boss and can be seen in prerelease footage for the game, but was cut entirely for unknown reasons. His voice clips can still be found in the game’s files.
Puyo Puyo (1992)
Nasu Grave is the second opponent in the Beginner's course. He scares Arle by suddenly jumping out of a bush.
In the English version, he is known as Blue Ghost. The cutscene is nearly identical.
Puyo Puyo Tsu
Nasu Grave resides on the third floor. He appears out of nowhere and bounces off of Arle's head.
Puyo Puyo~n
Nasu Grave is not playable in any console version of the game, but makes a cameo in Pocket Puyo Puyo~n. He is seen performing trapeze in the opening cutscene.
Puyo Puyo Box
In addition to the standard Nasu Grave, Box contains a more powerful version named Yaki Nasu Grave.
Puyo Puyo! 15th Anniversary
Nasu Grave returns in 15th Anniversary. Having never previously been in a Puyo Puyo game with spell cut-in animations or unique chants for every character, his spells are directly pulled from his attacks in the Madou Monogatari series. His three wishes were to become taller, wear contacts, or not be an eggplant. But since the medal heard more than three wishes, none came true.
Trivia
- He is based on Kazunari Yonemitsu, the eggplant-hating Compile employee who created the Madou Monogatari and Puyo Puyo series.
- In Kirby's Avalanche Bronto Burt uses his AI.
- Outside of the playable characters who debuted in Puyo Puyo Tetris, Nasu Grave is the only character playable in a mainstream SEGA-created Puyo game to not be available as an icon in Puyo Puyo eSports. In Puyo Puyo Tetris 2, he is outright the only character without a card previously in a SEGA-era Puyo Puyo title.
- Nasu Grave's peduncle and sepals appear to simply rest on his head, similarly to a hat. In Madou Monogatari: Tower of the Magician, enemy Nasu Graves can attack by sending them spinning at Schezo like propellers.
- This attack returns as one of his spells in Puyo Puyo! 15th Anniversary, now called Boomerang of Eggplant, though seemingly without the spinning.
- Nasu Grave has the 3rd biggest dropset, right behind Carbuncle and Baldanders.
