Puyo Puyo!! Quest information | |
Ai is a character in Puyo Puyo Tetris. He is the chief engineer on the Starship Tetra. He normally acts like a knowledgeable gentleman, but is easily reduced to a whimpering mess when bullied or panicking. He is based on the I Tetrimino.
Biography
Appearance
Ai takes the appearance of a tall, humanoid dog. His skin color is a very pale color of beige, and he also has cyan-colored irises. He wears tight blue clothes similar to Tee's, with button-imbued clothes with cyan linings. The two notable parts of these clothes are the ones covering his shoulders and back legs. He wears gloves on his hands, coupled with boots on his feet.
Personality
Ai is very intelligent. As the engineer of the Spaceship Tetra, he is in charge of maintaining it in good condition and repairing it when it becomes broken. He also speaks in a very calm and refined matter. However, he is prone to being startled by others, especially Jay and Elle. In this panicking persona, he exhibits a dog-like behavior and barking at others when confronted. A battle with him usually calms him down and he then returns to his usual self.
Abilities
Ai's spells include Beautiful, Gorgeous, Magnificent, Exquisite, and Dazzling, all of which are synonyms relating to prettiness or beauty. In the Japanese version, he says Beautiful in different languages. He also carries a plumb bob in the shape of a small gray cone attached to a string. Although he uses it during his chain animations, he is not shown to be using it outside of battle, except in the Chapter 2 side story of Puyo Puyo Tetris 2, where he refers to it as a "Tracking Pendulum".
Relationships
- Ex
- As revealed in Ex's dream chapter during Puyo Puyo Tetris, Ai was adopted by Ex as a puppy. Ex comments that Ai was merely a runt when he adopted him long ago. Ai seems to have a deep respect for Ex and looks up to him as a father figure.
- Jay & Elle
- The duo like to pull pranks on Ai, such as lacing his dog food with spice, tying a bow on his tail, or just outright making fun on him, much to his dismay.
- Risukuma
- Ai seems to get along with Risukuma, probably due to their scientific prowess and love for science. The two worked together to repair the Starship Tetra and get it to work again in Puyo Puyo Tetris.
- Zed
- Ai has worked with Zed to create a hologram of Tee, so that they can communicate with him no matter where he is. Zed has also been shown to take care of Ai when he is in his frightened state.
History
Puyo Puyo Tetris
Ai makes his first appearance in Chapter 1-5. He is initially shown cowering in fear, thanks to Jay & Elle's teasing. When Tee, Ringo, and Amitie arrive at the scene, where the twins tell them that he was scarred by a little yellow guy and a strange girl (Carbuncle and Arle). Tee challenges Ai to a Tetris battle to calm his nerves, as well as to find out where the two of them went.
Upon crash-landing into Suzuran in Chapter 2, Ai returns to his panicked state as Zed tries to calm him down. Risukuma directs Tee, Ringo, and Maguro to their location, and Ringo is the one to calm down Ai with a Puyo battle. Afterwards, he sticks around with Risukuma to help repair the SS Tetra.
Ai shows up again in Chapter 10, when Ex asks for a fun dream. Jay & Elle show up and present a scarred Ai as a gift, complete with a bow tied to his tail. After Ex fights them off, Ai tries to blow off the fact that he was scarred, as Ex mentions how much he's grown.
Puyo Puyo Tetris 2
Ai is introduced in Chapter 2 in a similar manner to the first game, being chased away by Jay & Elle in the greenhouse room. After Jay & Elle reveal that Ai was frightened by an 'eerie presence' (Marle), Tee, Ringo, Amitie, and Arle track down Ai to learn more about it, but he's still scarred from everything going on. Tee battles Ai to a Tetris battle to bring him to his senses, where he reveals that Marle was making her way to the engine room.
During the chapter's side story, Ai gets frightened upon realizing that Tee and O are missing. Ess calms him down with a Puyo battle, where he then uses his tracking pendulum to pinpoint the location of O.
In Chapter 4, Ai brings up that his scanners aren't detecting Marle as the source of the magic. He is also involved in helping Marle regain her memories by having a "battle of passion" with Jay & Elle. Outside of these scenarios, he is usually relegated to miscellaneous battles, like when he and Risukuma have a battle of intellect during the competition in Chapter 5.
Trivia
- Like Risukuma, his spell clips consist of a phrase in different languages— in his case, "Beautiful".
- In the English version, these are changed to synonyms for "Beautiful".
- Alternate Voice notes:
- In Puyo Puyo Tetris, he has a flat, robot-like voice, similar to Risukuma's alt. voice in Puyo Puyo!! 20th Anniversary.
- In the English version, his voice becomes more dog-like.
- In Puyo Puyo Tetris 2, his voice become deeper and more suave.
- In the English version, he gains an Australian accent, and his voice become deeper and grittier.
- In Puyo Puyo Tetris, he has a flat, robot-like voice, similar to Risukuma's alt. voice in Puyo Puyo!! 20th Anniversary.
- Interestingly, Ai's English alternate voice file in Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 contains a leftover from the first Puyo Puyo Tetris, where the voice file that would be used for his fifth online greeting instead having Japanese alternate voice clip for his fourth spell from the first game, as Alt. Voice of Online Greetings are unused. A similar situation occurs with Sonic.
