Video Games

The achievement for completing Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine is called "Yatta!", which is the same voice line spoken by Arle when completing a level in Puyo Puyo.

3D Dot Game Heroes

One of the many loading screens in the game is a reference to the box art for Super Puyo Puyo.

BlazBlue Series

In BlazBlue Central Fiction, Noel Vermillion has an alternate color palette that references Rulue. This is referencing that both Noel and Rulue share the same Japanese voice actress, Kanako Kondou.

In BlazBlue Cross Tag Battle, Platinum the Trinity has an alternate color palette that references Lidelle.

Hyperdimension Neptunia Series

The Skeleton enemy designs references Skeleton-T. They're skeletons on a floating blue pillow while holding a NepVitan V.

A character by the name of "1st-Gen Compa" makes an appearance at the beginning of Hyperdimension Neptunia mk2 in the Gamindustri Graveyard as a ghost. Her design is heavily inspired by Carbuncle, which features yellow bunny ears, a red gem on her forehead, and a green belt buckle that looks very similar to a green Puyo. Her name references the original Compile company, referencing how the company went defunct in the early 2000's.

1st-Gen Compa would appear again in Hyperdimension Neptunia Victory as a playable character, but only in the Japan-only DLC.

Dengeki Bunko: Fighting Climax

In Dengeki Bunko: Fighting Climax, Mikoto Misaka has an alternate color palette that references Arle.

Danganronpa V3: Killing Harmony

The description for the Jelly Balls present mentions that "Lining up four of the same color won't make them vanish."

Minecraft

The official "Sonic Texture Pack" from the Minecraft Marketplace reskins the Slime and Magma Cube to look more like a green and purple Puyo respectively. The inclusion of these reskins are most likely based on Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine.

Skullgirls

In Skullgirls, the duo Annie and Sagan has an alternate color palette that references Arle and Carbuncle respectively. This is referencing that both Annie and Arle share the same English voice actress, Erica Mendez.

Scratchin' Melodii

In Sidechain Fever, the track "Sidechain Fever" acts as a love letter to the Puyo Puyo franchise as a whole:

  • This is the first song to change the artstyle while playing. The artstyle is changed to emulate the style of Takenami Hideyuki, who has done character designs and redesigns for the Puyo Puyo series starting with Puyo Puyo Fever. Additionally, the artstyle of this track's cover references the boxart cover of Puyo Puyo Fever.
  • The singer of Sidechain Fever, Rensa, has her name reference the Japanese term for a chain combo, rensa (連鎖).
  • Her DJ for this song, MC Bean Machine, is a reference to Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine.
  • The title of the song is a reference to the musical term "sidechain", which means a brief drop in volume, as well as a reference to a chain combo.

Animation

Neon Genesis Evangelion

Episode 23 "Tears" has a game called "Poyo Poyo II" on the floor in the scene where Asuka is playing video games. The cover art for the game is similar to the box art for Puyo Puyo on the Game Boy.
