Puyoman (ぷよまん), now officially referred to as Puyo Puyo Manjyu (ぷよぷよまんじゅう), are a manjū treat originally produced and sold by Compile, made to look like Puyos. They were originally sold at the "Puyoman Main Store" in Miyajima, Hiroshima alongside other merchandise for the franchise. A version of this store also exists in-universe, which is run by Momomo.

History

Puyoman originally released in January of 1995, and continued to be sold until Compile's closure in 2003. After a nearly 20-year absence from the market, SEGA began selling a recreation using the same molds and recipe, under the aforementioned new name, in April of 2023. Puyoman were highly popular during their original run, and were featured prominently in artwork and other media related to Puyo Puyo and Madou Monogatari.

One appears as minor character in the Game Gear version of Madou Monogatari III, serving as an advertisement. It is initially mistaken to be a Yellow Puyo by the game, but Arle is quick to realize that it is actually a steamed bun. It begins to talk, stating that they will be sold in Miyajima, Hiroshima beginning in January of 1995, the month after the game's release. After it leaves, Arle is left confused by the encounter. In the mobile port of the game, released in 2009, its dialogue is changed to tell of how it used to be found in Hiroshima, asking that it not be forgotten.

A new flavor, chocolate, was added to Sega's lineup of the product on September 20th, 2024.[1]

Trivia

  • The 2023 rebrand to Puyo Puyo Manjyu is likely due to the Puyoman name being owned by D4 Enterprise, the company which currently holds the rights to the Madou Monogatari series.
