Puyo Puyo Sun (ぷよぷよSUN, Puyopuyo SUN) also as Puyo Puyo 3 is the third installment of the Puyo Puyo game series. The game was initially developed for the Sega Saturn-based ST-V arcade hardware in 1996. The game's title and emphasis on the sun is a play on the Japanese word for the number three, san (さん, 三).
Story

Satan reads a magazine and feels the desire for a tanned skin to get a lot of female attention. So Satan decides to use his magic to make the sun much larger and create a tropical paradise. Arle and Carbuncle find the sun too hot and see the castle from which Satan's heatwave is emanating. Schezo also travels to Satan's castle to take back the night. Draco however, loves the hot weather and sets out to the hill to sunbathe in a bikini.
Gameplay

Puyo Puyo Sun introduces the eponymous Sun Puyo. By offsetting waiting Nuisance Puyo, the player earns Sun Puyo that drop into random columns. These Puyo are similar to Nuisance Puyo except that, when cleared, they increase the amount of Nuisance that the opponent receives. Sun Puyo is also given whenever the player performs an All Clear.
Single Puyo Puyo
The major single player mode in Sun is a trio of gauntlets that are similar in nature to Puyo Puyo (1992)'s Scenario mode. The Easy course features Draco Centauros, who battles three opponents. The Normal course follows Arle Nadja, who takes on thirteen enemies. Schezo Wegey is the player's character in the Hard course; his course is an abridged, but overall more difficult version of Arle's course . All three characters have unique story scenes.
Easy
When Satan enlarges the sun, Draco actually uses this opportunity to try and get a tan.
After Choppun is defeated, Draco successfully gets her tan, in her very revealing bathing suit, only to find that it is far too hot for her, sending her flying into the sky.
Normal
Arle and Carbuncle do not like the heat, and set off to stop Satan to save the world from his climate alterations.

Schezo, too, wishes to stop Satan's plans and restore the sun to normal, but only because it makes it harder for him to sleep.

Upon the defeat of Satan, Carbuncle, or the player to Carbuncle, the game ends. What the ending is like depends on the difficulty.
Multiplayer Puyo Puyo
In addition to the standard Puyo Puyo competitive mode, Sun's console ports include a Tournament mode (that supports up to 16 human and AI players) and a competitive Nazo Puyo mode. The PC version supports netplay, using a Direct TCP/IP exchange.

Player Select cheats
On the player select screen in either Versus or Tournament modes, some characters have special properties. To activate these, highlight the character and hold Start for a few seconds.
- Arle - Adds Carbuncle to the menu
- Schezo - Adds Satan to the menu
- Draco - Each player chooses their opponent's character
- Rulue - Randomizes all further selections
- Zoh Daimaoh - Changes everyone to Zoh.

Other Versions
Following the arcade release, Puyo Puyo Sun was ported to the then-current home consoles. The Saturn version was released merely three months after the arcade release, while the other ports were released in late 1997 and throughout 1998. The Saturn, PlayStation, and Windows 95 versions feature fully voiced cutscenes unlike the original ST-V version.
One quirk across all home ports is that the game's music is arranged in a slightly different key than the ST-V version's BGM.
Pocket Puyo Puyo Sun

A version of Puyo Puyo Sun was ported to the The Game Boy Color version of Puyo Puyo Sun with the addition of 4 characters: Scylla, Cait Sith, Uroko Sakana Bito, and Minotauros.
VS Puyo Puyo SUN
In August 19, 2022, a simplified port of the game called VS Puyo Puyo Sun ( ふたりでぷよぷよSUN Futari de Puyopuyo SUN) released in October 27, 2022 as a bonus game for the SEGA Genesis Mini 2, known outside North America as the Mega Drive Mini 2. This port only features the multiplayer modes of the game.
Trivia
- Compile's president, Masamitsu "Moo" Niitani, voiced Satan in this game.
- A voice actor audition was held in between the Saturn and N64 ports, resulting in voiceover changes for Skeleton-T, Incubus, and Rulue.
- Sega re-released Puyo Puyo Sun for the PlayStation in 2003, making it one of only two games that Sega has released for the console.
- This game introduces character-specific chain voices, chain cut-ins, and victim animations; all of which have stuck with the subsequent games since.
- It also features character-specific popping animations, which have not been seen since the PlayStation port of Puyo Puyo~n.
