Transformation (ぷよぷよだいへんしん Puyopuyo Daihenshin), also known as Great Transformation or Daihenshin is the name of the rule introduced in Puyo Puyo 7. It is also the default rule set of the said game, and was used to promote it in early press-release info. The mode is similar to Fever mode in many ways, but it also is unique in other ways. Transformation uses dropsets, except during Mega Puyo Rush. Although Transformation itself was not included in Puyo Puyo!! 20th Anniversary, Mega Puyo Rush and Mini Puyo Fever were included as separate non-stop modes.

Basic Mechanics

The gameplay rules are very similar to Fever, except that no Fever gauge or Fever mode are present. Instead, a Transformation Gauge is visible. The transformation gauge is filled by either offsetting Garbage Puyos (compare to the Fever Gauge), or by eliminating Garbage Puyos from your board. The transformation time, which is how long one can be in either transformation form, starts at 15 seconds, and can be increased to 99 seconds by simply clearing Puyos. When the transformation gauge is filled completely, the player goes into a transformation and the character and board transform, depending on the options chosen at the beginning of the round. If you pick "Both" at the beginning of the round, the Transformation mode entered differs depending on the final colour of Puyos cleared in the chain that finishes filling the Transformation Gauge. Red, Blue and Purple Puyo make you enter Mega Puyo Rush, while Green and Yellow Puyo will make you enter Mini Puyo Fever. When the time runs out, the player returns to their field, with their transformation gauge and time reset, and their last piece before entering if they went into Mega Puyo Rush. While in either transformation, Garbage Puyos do not fall until the player exits the transformation. If the player performs an All Clear, the are awarded with a 5 second bonus for Transformation and a preset 4 chain. It also introduces Quick Drop, where a Puyo can instantaneously be dropped by pressing up, though no points are awarded for quick dropping. Of course, one can still press down to make the Puyos fall faster, rather than instantly.

Mega Puyo Rush

In Mega Puyo Rush (でかぷよラッシュ, Deka Puyo Rasshu), the character transforms into a more adult-like form, and the field size changes to 3x6, making it resemble Puyo Puyo! 15th Anniversary's Giant Puyo mode. While in this mode, the player's objective is to make as many clears as possible in the time they have. Each clear adds to their chain, which is shown as an equation: (initial chain) + (subsequent chains). The total number of chains cannot exceed 99, despite it being possible to have an endless chain. Since each clear adds to the chain, it becomes more and more powerful. Players who spend excessive amounts of time in this mode will send massive amounts of garbage to their opponent. If a Puyo covers the X, the player is given a 5 second time penalty, and their field is cleared. If the player performs an All Clear, the player is given a time bonus of 2 seconds. If the player fails to clear any Puyos within 5 seconds, their chain is broken and they have to start again from one.

There are some slight changes in Puyo Puyo!! 20th Anniversary's Mega Puyo Rush. Filling Puyos up to the X will now make the player lose. Garbage Puyos are now able to fall in this mode, and they will fall one at a time. As this is a non-stop mode, an All Clear will no longer give a time bonus. Instead, it will now give a chain bonus equal to the following equation, with n being the length of the chain that was used to create an All Clear:

If n is equal to 1
bonus = 1
Else
bonus = n * (n - 1)

The bonus will always be a minimum of +1 (a 1 chain will produce a +1 bonus, a 2 chain will produce a +2 bonus, a 3 chain will produce a +6 bonus, a 4 chain will produce a +12 bonus, and so on...). The player now has 3 seconds to clear any Puyo in order to prevent their chain from being broken.

An Endless version of Mega Puyo Rush is available in Puyo Puyo 7 and Puyo Puyo!! 20th Anniversary. It is essentially identical to the Endless Fever mode, where the objective is to achieve the highest chain and score in the 60 seconds provided, although this time can be increased up to 99 seconds through the use of All Clears. In Puyo Puyo 7, an All Clear gives the player an additional 2 seconds, whereas in Puyo Puyo!! 20th Anniversary, an All Clear gives the player an enormous 24 additional seconds.

Expectantly, but still notably, the character's dropset is ignored entirely. Instead, the player's dropset stops cycling and temporarily, only pair Puyo drops are released. Because it interrupts the cycling of the dropset, the next Puyos from the match are not interrupted or used in Mega Puyo Rush; whatever next Puyos you had when you entered Mega Puyo Rush, you will have when you leave Mega Puyo Rush.

Mini Puyo Fever

In Mini Puyo Fever (ちびぷよフィーバー, Chibi Puyo Fībā), For example character transforms into a child-like form, and the board size increases to 10x18. In this mode, preset chains drop like in Fever Mode. If the player successfully triggers the chain, the chain increases in size by 2 if the chain length is even and increases by 3 if the chain length is odd. If the chain ends in an All Clear, the chain increases by an additional chain. If the player fails to correctly set off the chain, the chain is reduced by 1. The maximum possible chain, without player extension, is 37. Players are given time bonuses for setting off the chain correctly and by getting All Clears. When a Puyo reaches the X, the player is given a 99 second time penalty, which instantly kicks the player out of Mini Puyo Fever.

In Puyo Puyo!! 20th Anniversary, Mini Puyo Fever is played using the rules of Non-Stop Fever. A successful chain increases the chain by 1, and an All Clear increases the chain by an additional 2 chains. If the player fails to correctly set off the chain, the chain isn't reduced if the player fails by 1 chain, it reduces by 1 if the player fails by 2 chains, and reduces by 2 if the player fails by 3 or more chains. Garbage Puyos are now able to fall and having Puyos reach the X's will make the player lose.

Puyo Puyo!! 20th Anniversary also uses a unique dropset regardless of character choice. Unlike all other dropsets that repeat every 16 pieces, this dropset repeats every 6 pieces. Totals shown here are an average out of 16 pieces.
