List of Puyo Puyo References in Media

This is a list that contains instances of the Puyo Puyo series being referenced in other games and media. For instances where Puyo Puyo has a more prominent presence, see List of Puyo Puyo Appearances in Media.

Video Games

Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection

The achievement for completing Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine is called "Yatta!", which is the same voice line spoken by Arle when completing a level in Puyo Puyo.

One of the many loading screens in the game is a reference to the box art for Super Puyo Puyo.

Hyperdimension Neptunia Series

A character by the name of "1st-Gen Compa" makes an appearance at the beginning of Hyperdimension Neptunia mk2 in the Gamindustri Graveyard as a ghost. Her design is heavily inspired by Carbuncle, which features yellow bunny ears, a red gem on her forehead, and a green belt buckle that looks very similar to a green Puyo. Her name references the original Compile company, referencing how the company went defunct in the early 2000's.

1st-Gen Compa would appear again in Hyperdimension Neptunia Victory as a playable character, but only in the Japan-only DLC.

Danganronpa V3: Killing Harmony

The description for the Jelly Balls present mentions that "Lining up four of the same color won't make them vanish."

SEGA AGES Herzog Zwei

Lecture 6 of the Herzog Academy mode titled "Outpost Occupation Mission" has the instructor teach the player how to occupy outposts. When explaining that four infantry are needed to occupy an outpost, she says "Don't worry, four of the same color touching doesn't make them disappear in this game!". An animation of four yellow Puyo popping, along with Arle chanting "Fire!" from the arcade release of Puyo Puyo happen as well.

Minecraft

The official "Sonic Texture Pack" from the Minecraft Marketplace reskins the Slime and Magma Cube to look more like a green and purple Puyo respectively. The inclusion of these reskins are most likely based on Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine.

Animation

Cardcaptor Sakura

Episode 28 "Sakura and the Enchanted Cards" contains a set of four green Puyos in the background of one scene.

Film

Sonic the Hedgehog (Movie Franchise)

The opening SEGA logo present in each film features gameplay of the arcade version of Puyo Puyo, Puyo Puyo Tsu, Puyo Puyo!! Quest, and Puyo Puyo Champions, alongside other Sega games.
