In Puyo Puyo Tsu, the main single player mode is progressed through the floors of a tower. Opponents are separated by floors, and faced via roulette until the player raises enough EXP to advance.
In several console ports, a light story is presented. In Super Puyo Puyo Tsu, after finishing the beginner mode, Arle is invited by Satan to prove her worth as a Puyo champion, by facing the great Puyo masters he has gathered in his tower. Arle is intrigued, but decides on coming back another day, as she feels it's getting late.

Puyo Puyo Chronicle

The Color Tower exists in Ally's world, residing in Purplune, the Purple Village which experiences eternal nightfall. The only way to reach the tower, proven by Witch's failed attempt to reach it by broom, is to gather all 5 colored star-shaped stones, one in each town visited by Arle's party. Once the party arrives, Satan is waiting for them, who tells Arle that its power can be used for them to return to the Madou World. Arle refuses, as she is unsure of what it would mean for Ally's safety.
