The Devil Rock (悪魔ロック) Series, formerly known as the Devil (悪魔) Series, is a series of 5 characters introduced in Puyo Puyo!! Quest. They are a 5-man indie rock band, though they argue over what their name should be. They have played for many large audiences on Pwurp Island. The band itself is unstable, as the members often disagree on things, get into fights, and compete with one another. They've considered replacements for some members, while others have considered leaving on their own accord. Each member's goals for being in the band vary greatly, they are not the closest of friends, and there are many things they dislike about each other, but they still care about one another and are united by their love of music and performance. Their music requires a supreme technique that ordinary humans are incapable of performing. Their performances are said to be powerful enough that even hearing them once will ignite the souls of their listeners in an unforgettable way. When they become motivated enough during a performance, they can morph into their Spirited forms, indicating their resolve in their music. In Puyo Puyo!! Quest, all of their skill names use English words.

The band members have different proposed names for the band:

  • Hed wants to call the band "Hell's Hamburg" (ヘルズ・ハンバーグ).
  • Stornum wants to call the band "Rainy Rose" (レイニー・ローズ).
  • Peruvis wants to call the band "Caramel Pudding" (キャラメル・プディング).

Hed is the vocalist of the Devil Rock band, as well as its leader. He is very outgoing, egotistical, and passionate, which strengthens him to drive his band forward, though his drive can overwhelm the other band members. Hed believes he is the best vocalist in the world. He is an encouraging presence, for his band members as well as others, and he believes he can persevere through any situation no matter what. He hates being bored and is impatient, as he likes jumping into things head-first. Despite this, he believes that if he's going to do something, he should do it all the way. As the band's leader, he organizes the band's gigs and training regimen. While Hed moves at his own pace, he still cares strongly for the other members. He has an earth-shaking voice and is a skilled musician, preferring to make songs that are soulful. Listeners of his music tend to instinctively rock along, and he loves it when he manages to make other people shout alongside him, as his dream is to ignite the world with his music. He loves hamburgers and mentions them very frequently, eating them between performances, requesting others to eat them with him, and even showing skill in grilling them. In his Japanese appearances, he will often shout remarks in English.

He appears as a playable character in Puyo Puyo Champions.

Trivia

Stornum is the guitarist of the Devil Rock band. He is said to be naturally gifted guitarist, and he is an intense performer despite his cool and collected appearance. He is dedicated to his skills and is said to practice every day with his guitar. He's normally quite mellow, but he considers himself a ladies' man, often becoming flirty with any woman he meets, and claiming to be open to anyone, and saying he never forgets a woman's name and face. However, his playboy mannerisms can take others aback or land him in trouble, and often disgust and concern his fellow band members. This side of him makes him very minded towards fanservice, and he is said to pay attention to the audience more than any of his bandmates, due in part to the passionate gazes he recieves from female fans. He is said to study the hearts of women every day. Many of his fans are swooned by the juxtaposition between his normal laid-back side and his intense performing side. His greatest pleasure is performing live on stage. He often says "HEY HEY HEY~" and his speech is often annotated with music notes.

Trivia

  • Stornum has a light association with rain. His Active Skill is called Heavy Rain, and he wishes for the band to be called Rainy Rose.
  • The symbol on Stornum's Blue Devil's Record resembles the piece on the headstock of his guitar.

Costa Costa ver. HW Yukata Costa Vivid Costa

Costa is the bassist of the Devil Rock band. He has a stoic disposition, though he can be bashful on occasion. Costa's standoffishness can make it hard to get to know him, but he is open and accepting towards those he trusts. Even when performing or in other exciting scenarios, he keeps a calm air about him. His stoicism elicits great dedication on his part, which is recognized by his fellow bandmates. His dedication leads him to be a perfectionist in everything he does, being particular down to the outfits he wears. His perfectionism can cause him to be unsatisfied with his work or the work of his peers. He sets strict rules and standards for himself, and tries to abide by them no matter what others may think. He laments that others may look at him as passive or inflexible. In the event that he takes center stage, he finds a drive that he never knew he had in him, saying it's the best he's ever felt. According to Stornum, there are rumors that Costa may have once been a vocalist, also evidenced in Substory 4 of PuyoQuest World where the band discusses a competition from their youths. Costa's level of attachment to the band is minimal, as he only wishes to train with them to become as perfect a bassist as he can be.

Trivia

  • Costa may have written a song in his youth called "Bacon Street" (ベーコン・ストリート).
  • Costa claims to eat bacon, eggs, and coffee for breakfast every single day.
    • He also implies that he drinks the same blend of coffee every day.
    • He also enjoys coffee-flavored candy.
  • Costa gets to bed late and wakes up early, resulting in sleep deprivation.
  • He has confidence in his skills with tongue-twisters.
  • In Ciel's Special Training Theater, Costa runs a food stand with Rulue and Maguro.
  • The symbol on Costa's Green Devil's Record resembles the design on the brim of his hat.

Vartebra Vartebra ver. HW Bûche de Vartebra Eminent Vartebra

Vartebra is the drummer of the Devil Rock band. He has an optimistic personality and isn't one to sweat the details, preferring to take it easy. He has a relaxed aura even right before the start of a show, but he is said to make the earth shake with his wild and powerful performances. He is suprisingly supportive and caring for others, usually being the one to solve any conflict that may arise in the band, and being open to handling any trouble that one may have. Because of this, Vartebra's bandmates naturally rely on him, and he believes the harmony of the band to be his responsibility. He's also good at cooking and makes meals for his bandmates, being particularly skilled in mincing. He takes pride in his cooking as he insists others eat his food. He has his own vegetable garden, and he claims to be good at making meals that mask the taste of veggies, since the other band members are picky eaters. He is good at adjusting to each member's varying tastes. Vartebra has an attachment to his specific drumset, claiming that he will never part with it and carefully maintaining it after every show.

Trivia

  • As all of his artwork has depicted him with his drumset, Vartebra has never been seen below the torso.
  • Bûche de Vartebra is named after and based on a bûche de Noël, or yule log, a type of cake traditionally eaten during Christmas.
    • It is unclear whether his drumset is actually a cake, but the cymbal is said to smell like chocolate.
  • The symbol on Vartebra's Yellow Devil's Record matches the emblem on his bass drum.
    • A similar emblem can be seen on Yukata Costa's custom bass guitar.

Peruvis is the keyboardist of the Devil Rock band, as well as its only female member. She has a headstrong personality and is somewhat impatient. She has a short temper, tends to speak harshly towards others, and gets extremely scary when she's angered. However, her extreme tendencies are said to be due to her strong passion for rock music. While she always seems angry, she often uses anger as a veil for her kind and supportive personality. Peruvis also has a bashful and girlish side, enjoying wearing frilly outfits and pouring her heart into baking for others. She hates the idea of being looked down upon because of her gender and tends to hide her girlish side and love for cute things. She isn't satisfied with lukewarm music and insists that people always give it their all, hating half-heartedness and modesty. She enjoys pudding, eating it frequently and wishing to name the band after it. While she is a keyboardist, she also has vocal skills and sang the chorus during the band's Halloween performance. She is popular and has a big presence on stage, though she doesn't fully realize it.

Relationships

Within Devil Rock

Hed and Costa
While Costa is a perfectionist, he believes that Hed's imperfect vocals are what make his performances special. When Costa loses interest in the band due to thinking they won't bring him any closer to perfection, it's Hed's performing despite his imperfections that cause Costa to reconsider.
Hed and Vartebra
The two have been friends since they were children. They performed together in contests in the Underworld long ago, and have fond memories of them. Vartebra would also visit Hed's house. In Substory 4 of PuyoQuest World, Vartebra is the only band member to stick with Hed during the band's fight, suggesting an increased level of loyalty between them. Vartebra claims that they're basically inseperable.
Stornum and Peruvis
Since Peruvis is the only female member of the band, Stornum acts differently towards Peruvis due to his tendency to flirt with women. Despite this, Stornum doesn't flirt with her often, instead liking to tease her. Peruvis often expresses annoyance towards his playboy disposition, and attacks him if he gets on her bad side, which is often.

Other Characters

Peruvis and Amitie
The two are forced to work together during the events of Hop Step Pwurp World, but they quickly become friends. Amitie expresses admiration towards Peruvis' kindness, and Peruvis similarly cares for Amitie. In their Valkyrie forms, they can combine their power with incredible synergy.
Peruvis and Zelhelmr
Peruvis' confrontational personality clashes with Zelhelmr's standoffishness and carefree nature upon their first meeting. When observing their fighting, Amitie remarks that they remind her of her classmates who constantly fight but work perfectly together, likely referring to Raffina and Klug. When Zelhelmr finds Peruvis more sensible than he first thought, he decides to grant her use of the World Tree of the Underworld's powers, transforming her into Valkyrie Peruvis.
