Puyo Day (ぷよの日) is an officially recognized event that celebrates the Puyo Puyo series, celebrated on February 4 of each year. The day was initially created to celebrate the release of Puyo Puyo Fever, but has been celebrated every year since.

The February 4 date is taken from the Japanese wordplay of Goroawase (語呂合わせ), where the numbers 2 and 4 can be pronounced as "fu-yo", with the "fu" being pronounced as "pu" when written out with the handakuten (半濁点) diacritic mark.

History

Following Sega's acquisition of the Puyo Puyo series from Compile, and the release of Puyo Puyo Fever in Japan, Sega announced that they would be celebrating 2004 as the "Year of Puyo". In addition, they also announced that February 4 would be viewed as "Puyo Day", alongside the 24th of each month.[1]

Puyo Day's Anniversary Certificate of Approval.

On January 14, 2004, Sega revealed that the February 4 date was registered with the Japan Anniversary Association (日本記念日協会) as an officially recognized holiday on January 1, 2004.[2] The PlayStation 2 release of Puyo Puyo Fever was released on the very first Puyo Day, on February 4, 2004. Throughout the rest of the year, various other ports of Puyo Puyo Fever would be released on the 24th of each month.

In recent years, Sega usually airs a Puyo Day Livestream on Twitter/X to announce new information on the series, including merchandise, eSports, and new information on upcomming Puyo Puyo!! Quest updates. These livestreams sometimes air a few days prior to the actual Puyo Day.

On February 4, 2021, Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 released its second content update, which was announced during the Puyo Day 2021 livestream.

In Puyo Puyo Puzzle Pop, the player will receive a random item when logging in on the 24th of any month.
