I've seen countless Puyo fans (and even a few Tetris fans) clamor for Fever (rule) to be in Puyo Puyo Tetris 2, pretty much ever since the game was launched. Here is a list of reasons why introducing Tetris to Fever rule (as would be necessary, this IS a crossover game) would end in tragedy!

Puyo vs Tetris

Let's start with Puyo vs Tetris. Party has set the standard for how Fever-type modes would be implemented for Tetris, and Boss Raid has Lucky Attack and Fever present against another board, so we can take some reasonable guesses.

  • Conversion from Tetris lines -> Puyo garbage will be weaker, presumably to accommodate a garbage rate of 120. You can test it yourself - in Party mode, 6 lines sends 11 trash instead of 13, and 60 lines (full red bar) sends a crown, a rock, and 4 lines, rather than a crown, a moon, a star, and 2 lines.
  • Other than that, Tetris will pretty much function the same as in Versus. This could change, but any changes made for Tetris in Fever rule would be backported to Party in the same update, since Party is a Fever-type ruleset.
  • Tetris will struggle to do damage to Puyo with Lucky Attack. 30 seconds of Lucky Attack in Boss Raid, with a skilled player, manages just over a star. 15 seconds sends just over 2 rocks. Unless they decide to use the legacy combo table (very unlikely), Puyo will outdamage Tetris consistently in Fever.
  • Garbage blocking is a must in Fever, and with the Fever meter present, 4wide will be even more meta than in Tetris vs Tetris. Harassing the Puyo player, then building a midgame 4wide when they go into Fever, will be the entire strategy of matchup Fever for Tetris.
  • Tetris will have no room for error in Lucky Attack. If you mess up once, you're pretty much already dead. Meanwhile, Puyo can botch Fever chains all they like - the worst you have to deal with is having 2 links cut off your next chain.
  • In general, Lucky Attack functions more like 20th Mega Puyo Rush than Fever. I imagine SEGA would learn from their little mistake in 7 and make it so that garbage only drops when they exit Lucky Attack, which basically gives the Puyo player free time to extend and build a chain that counters all that Lucky Attack damage easily. Play Carbuncle and Puyo shouldn't lose, ever.

Tetris vs Tetris

There is no reason to expect Tetris vs Tetris Fever to be any fun, in any way. Let's go over it!

  • A lot of what was said above about Tetris and Party mode still applies. Party mode doesn't alter how many lines Tetris sends to another Tetris player, so that's irrelevant, and generally it would probably function just like Versus.
  • ...which is a huge problem, because the combo table in Tetris is completely unreasonable. A decently fast player should be able to clear about 1 line per second, and even a 15-second Lucky Attack would send somewhere in the ballpark of 59 lines (44 lines for a 14 combo, + 15 since Lucky Attack is mostly doubles). This gets worse when you remember what was said in the other section above regarding 4wide being meta, and on top of that, there's way more room for error because the damage scales so quickly!
    • This could be mitigated somewhat by using a weaker combo table inside Lucky Attack, but one of SEGA or The Tetris Company refuses to let the devs alter the combo table in TvT, so I give this one low odds.
  • Even if the mode didn't use Lucky Attack (highly unlikely), the end result will almost certainly be stallwide battles galore anyway (because you don't want to give your opponent a free first Lucky Attack). Fun!
  • seriously this mode would be a disaster. if fever rule gets into ppt2 and ends up as unbalanced as i expect it to be, i will suck on my own elbow
