I only made this account to fix the grammar around here (sometimes), but I'm finding other stuff to do. (This mostly amounts to lurking on the recent changes page, but...)
Call me Bolt or Azzy. It's been a while since I've been around, but Puzzle Pop dragged me back into the abyss from Pop'n Music. I've played a handful of games now, but I think my favorites have to be Tetris 2, Sun and the Fever duology. I was also the resident Arle no Bouken player- my old phone with my saved file was stolen in December 2022, and I haven't gotten back into it. However, you can see this page for what I have documented for it, and I may replay it on my new phone to document what I missed in the main story. My favorite characters are listed in the infobox's Quest section!
If you need to reach out to me, I'm most easily contacted on Tumblr (mynarco/shepherdsguild if I have you blocked for whatever reason) or Twitter (Azure_Bolts).
Trivia
- Aside from Puyo, I'm also a fan of Fire Emblem, Cookie Run (unfortunately), Arknights, Pop'n Music and Flight Rising. If Quest ever has a collab with the former 4, I can identify the cosplays!
- I got dragged into this series purely because I thought Sig looked cool. I think Amanone now is my absolute favorite and it'd be nice if he got into a mainline game... but for now, I main Yu and Rei.
- My highest chain ever was 9, and even then that was in Endless and I haven't been able to chase that high since.
- Record in Endless Fever is 40m in Tetris 2, if I recall.
- Big Bang is my favorite mode due to how satisfying it is to set all those chains off!
- Carefree Puyo is the only Endless theme.
Messing Around And Finding Out (Spell Table Edition)
I like... the ability tables that certain characters (Arle, Amitie, Rulue, ect) have on their pages, they're very fun to look at. ...I wanna make some for other characters so I'm going to do that. Please don't add these to their pages, I will cry. (Also keep in mind that I'm really not good at descriptions, I'm just doing this for the heck of it.) Bolded spells will be those that are in use as of their most recent game (which will likely be PPT2), and I may comment on certain spells in italics.
Sig
Yes I'm biased what are you gonna do about it. I think most of his spells are dark magic (no proof for this, mind you, but I blame Aya). Also, fun fact; in PPT2, his spells turn red if he's facing left (P2 in a 1v1 or P3/4 (potentially) with more than 2 players)! 'Cause he's casting them with his claw! I think that's neat. (Fever 2 also showed off that spells from his claw end up red (Celadon and Hydrangea), so maybe it's a callback, but a neat one nonetheless!)
Spell | Description | ||
---|---|---|---|
Name | Effect | (Notable) Appearances | Element |
Cyan シアン |
Summons a relatively small "spark" of magic, dispersing quickly in the palm of his hand. | All | Dark |
Paraiba バライバ |
A downwards hand-slam of sorts imbued with magic. | Fever 2 | Dark |
Robin's Egg ロビンズエッグ |
A stronger version of either Paraiba (Fever 2) or Cyan (7, shares the animation). 15th spices it up, as it appears to be a bunch of magic rising from the ground. Which makes sense since it comes after Asmalte (described below); like he's following it up afterwards. |
Fever 2 - 7 | Dark |
Acid Wash Acid アシッド |
Sig's equivalent to spells like Diacute and Accelerate. | All | Status (potentially Dark in Champions) |
Zenith ゼニス |
Sends an opponent's attack right back at them. The thrilling prequel to Sapphire. | 15th and 7 | Defensive |
Asmalte アスマルト |
In 15th, it's a landing imbued with magic. In 7, it steals Celadon's animation. Don't ask me how I didn't figure this out earlier. |
15th and 7 | Dark |
Sapphire Celeste セレスト |
The thrilling sequel to Zenith, it's a new and improved counter spell! | 20th onwards | Defensive |
Cerulean セルリアン |
Flings a concentration of magic at the ground in front of his opponent, probably. That's how it looks to me. |
20th onwards (unused in Fever 2, absent in Champions) | Dark |
Lapis Lazuli ラピスラズリ |
Shoots a decently-sized "spark" of magic (bigger than the ones from Cyan and 7's Asmalte/Celadon) from his hand. | 20th onwards | Dark |
Celadon Celestial シレスティアル |
Several decently sized orbs (or sparks in 15th/7) of magic are summoned, hurling themselves at an opponent. Was instead a 1-2 strike of sorts in Fever 2, right then left, both imbued with magic. | All | Dark |
Cobalt Hydrangea ハイドレンジア |
Sig's signature spell (haha). As opposed to the rest of his spells, which typically only use his right hand to cast, this one uses both at once. The execution's changed over the games, but as of 20th he summons a very large orb of darkness to fling at his opponent. Presumably it explodes on impact. Darkness orbs manifesting. ...Manifesting in your house. |
All | Dark |
I'm still mad Hydrangea is called Cobalt in the localization. Teal (Fever 2's chain 5) was excluded because vague name + lack of animation = no idea what it could be.
Raffina
I think it's neat how even if someone's not too good at magic, they can still hold their own in a Puyo match with physical prowess. Raffina shows that off pretty well, I think she's cool! The whole idea of physical combat with a bit of magical spice is cool to me as a whole.
Spell | Description | ||
---|---|---|---|
Name | Effect | (Notable) Appearances | Element |
Allumage アルマージュ |
Feel free to call me out for including her chain 5 spell but not Sig's, but this is because I actually have an idea for it. It feels like it'd be some sort of small fire spell to ramp up power. | Fever duology | Fire(?) |
Fort フォルト |
Diacute/Accelerate equivalent. | All (localized as "Thrashing time!" after Fever) | Status (potentially Physical in Champions) |
Grêle グレール |
A palm strike imbued with ice magic. Neige likely took after this one. | Fever | Physical + Ice |
Étincelle エタンセル |
Another palm strike, this time imbued with lightning magic. Looks to be more like a charged headbutt in 15th, but I don't really know what to make of it there so I could be wrong. Steals Rage Soleil's animation in 7. | Fever duology - 7 | Physical + Electricity |
Avalanche アヴァランシュ |
An upwards kick imbued with ice magic. | Fever | Physical + Ice |
Averse アヴェルス |
A ground punch imbued with water magic (presumably, the effects make it a bit hard to tell). | Fever 2 | Physical + Water |
Orage オラージュ |
Another ground punch. Considering it translates to thunderstorm, and its effect color is the same as Étincelle in Fever 2, it probably also uses lightning magic. | Fever 2 - 7 | Physical + Electricity |
Frost Neige ネージュ |
In 15th/7, this appears to be a powerful landing imbued with ice magic, and there is probably a better way to phrase this. Turns into Grêle's thrilling sequel by 20th. | 15th onwards | Physical + Ice |
Scorch Flamme フラーム |
An uppercut imbued with fire magic. | 20th onwards (absent in Champions) | Physical + Fire |
Static Shock Décharge ディシャージ |
The thrilling sequel to Étincelle. At the very least it isn't sharing its animation with Neige anymore (as of PPT2), so it's looking more forceful. | 20th onwards | Physical + Electricity |
Fireworks Feu d'Arti(fice) フー・ダルティ |
Exactly what it says on the tin, she shoots a magical firework and looks cool while doing so. Shares its animation with Étincelle in Fever 2. | Fever duology, 20th onwards | Fire |
Rage Soleil ラージュソレイユ |
Similar to Feu d'Arti, which makes sense considering this is what replaced it for a couple of games. | 15th and 7 | Fire |
Rainbow Deluxe Ciel Arc シエルアーク |
Raffina's signature spell. A powerful kick (originally upwards, turning into a roundhouse starting with 7 (maybe 15th, but I haven't found footage of it)) imbued with light magic, leaving behind the afterimage of a rainbow. I like the little spin she does leading up to it starting with 20th. Makes it feel even stronger! |
All | Physical + Light |
Doing this really made me wish the animations for 15th and 7 were the same...
Lidelle
I've been asking a bot for whoever to do next, but I think it just wants me to finish doing the spells for the Primp kids, so might as well. Lidelle is precious and I wish she wasn't the go-to for being cut from some games. Though it seems like they might be doing away with the 24 character limit if PPT2 is anything to go off of..? (Interestingly, she has the most unique(?) spells out of all the magic school kids that were relevant past the Fever era at 15. Raffina and Klug are tied at 13, Sig and Amitie are tied at 12.)
Spell | Description | ||
---|---|---|---|
Name | Effect | (Notable) Appearances | Element |
Vento ヴェント |
Sends out blades of wind by means of her oversized sleeves, plus magic of course. She spins for it in Tetris 2. In one of the drama tracks (Extracurricular Activities at Primp Magic School), there's a point where Amitie has to call on the power of her friends to help defeat Popoi (taking the guise of a dragon). Everyone present uses their repeater spells, but as Lidelle doesn't have one, she uses this instead. This leads me to believe that Vento can be an equivalent to these spells, but I haven't got anything else to go off of... |
Fever duology, 20th onwards | Wind |
Lampo ランポ |
Electrifies the area around her. Her horns seem to act like lightning rods for this. What a shock, haha... |
Fever duology | Electricity |
Rota (Vento) ロタヴェント |
A stronger version of Vento that summons a twister. It looks small in Fever, but gets bigger in the sequel. You go, Lidelle! | Fever duology | Wind |
Bene (Lampo) ベネランポ |
A stronger version of Lampo, down to sharing the animation with a different effect. | Fever | Electricity |
Magnetis マニェティス |
Name is shortened from "Electtromagnetismo". The thrilling sequel to Bene Lampo. | Fever 2 | Electricity |
Brezza ブレッツァ |
Similar to Vento, but the effect is a slight bit different. Puyo YouTubers make a 15th Anniversary spell compilation challenge, had to ask a friend to help with these. |
15th | Wind |
Temporalesco テンポラレスコ |
Summons a storm cloud that shoots lightning bolts. | 15th | Electricity |
Tromba d'Aria トロンバダリア |
Spins around, whipping up a good deal of wind. A few of her future spells may have taken after this one. | 15th | Wind |
Fulmine フルミーネ |
Summons another storm cloud, unleashing massive lightning bolts. | 15th | Electricity |
Uragano ウラガーノ |
Another spinning spell! I think this one would involve a bit of water magic, too. It is a hurricane, after all! |
20th onwards | Wind + Water |
Tifone ティフォーネ |
In 20th, it's yet another spinning spell, though she does so in the sky similar to Trombo d'Aria. In Tetris 2, it becomes a pain orb of electricity. The fact that Draco has Typhoon as a spell... rotates that along with this one in my mind... |
20th onwards | Wind (20th), Electricity (T2) |
Tuono トゥオーノ |
In 20th, it's sort of like the thrilling sequel to Lampo. In Tetris 2, it instead steals Tifone's animation but replaces the element. | 20th onwards | Electricity |
Tempesta テンペスタ |
Shares its animation with both versions of Lampo, and shares Bene Lampo's lightning effect. The added bonus is an extra tornado. Thinking about how Satan had a spell named Tempest in Sun and rotating the fact that Lidelle had this in my mind... it doesn't mean much of anything but still! |
Fever (unused in Fever 2) | Electricity + Wind |
Sereno セレーノ |
Summons a beam of light, as if the weather's finally cleared up from the rest of her spells. | Fever 2 | Light |
Arcobaleno アルコバレーノ |
Lidelle's signature spell. In a similar vein to Sereno, the weather's finally cleared up; but instead of summoning a beam of light, she forms a rainbow. | 15th onwards | Light |
Daughter.
Klug
The last of the magic school kids! Also the one I'd most likely steal spells from if magic were real. A lot of them are space-themed, but I'll be marking most of these cosmic spells as dark magic since, well, he's aspiring to be a dark mage. Better reason than what I had for Sig, isn't it?
Spell | Description | ||
---|---|---|---|
Name | Effect | (Notable) Appearances | Element |
Nebula ネブラ |
Summons a good deal of dark clouds. I feel like if Nebula was ever in a modern Puyo game, the clouds would, well... actually kinda look like a nebula. But alas. |
Fever duology | Dark |
Ignis イグニス |
In Fever 1, it looks like a pain orb of dark fire magic; Fever 2 makes it look more like a flash of light and not like a pain orb at all. | Fever duology | Fire |
Lacteus Orbis ラクタス・オルビス |
Casts a gold-color spell from the Tome of Sealing in Fever 1. In Fever 2, it's depicted as stars falling from above. | Fever duology | Dark |
Nebula Macula ネブラ・マクラ |
Casts a different spell (purple this time!) from the Tome of Sealing in Fever 1; probably a stronger version of Lacteus Orbis. Fever 2's version summons a swirling galaxy above his head. Not too sure how to describe 15th/7's version. |
Fever - 7 | Dark |
Crinis クリニス |
Summons a comet that swirls about; presumably it hits its target eventually. | 15th and 7 | Dark |
Prominence プロミネンス |
Summons arcs of fire magic that bounce from the ground. Steals Crinis's animation in 7. | 15th and 7 | Fire |
Labores Solis ラボレスソリス |
Eclipses the opponent's spell, sending it back at them. | 15th and 7 | Defensive + Dark |
Crater Fossa フォッサ |
Cast in a similar way to Nebula, but with lighter clouds. Said clouds appear even lighter in Chronicle. Due to the name, I'm inclined to believe it actually makes a crater, but I have no proof of this being the case... |
20th onwards | Earth |
Tectonics テクトニック |
Similar to Prominence, summoning arcs of magic; however, the element differs. Steals Starlight's and Ursa Major's Tetris 1 animation in Tetris 2. | 20th onwards | Earth |
Starlight Stella Innerans ステラ・イネランス |
Finger Gun Of Magic. Bursts into multiple sparks in 20th, only shoots one huge spark in Tetris 2. | 20th onwards | Dark |
Lunar Eclipse Defectio Lunae ディフェクチオ・ルーナエ |
The thrilling sequel to Labores Solis. | 20th onwards | Defensive + Dark |
Ursa Major ウルサ・マヨル |
Calls upon the power of its namesake constellation to cast a strong spell. In Tetris 2, the power of the stars goes straight into the Tome of Sealing, allowing Ayashii to pop out and attack. I absolutely adore the Tetris 2 animation but? Why does Aya do that now? Does it just want to help out after 16 years (real time) of not doing that? 'Cause it DID help Klug with his last spell in Fever (unlisted because it was unnamed) and looked very spooky while doing so... man, I'm gonna be thinking on this for a while. |
15th onwards | Dark |
Gravity Strike Vis Attrahendi ウィス・アトラヘンディ |
Klug's signature spell. Sends the Tome of Sealing skyward as it creates a grand blast of starlight (20th) or falling stars shoot out from it (Fever 2(?), Tetris duology). There's probably a better way to describe it. But this spell is pretty darn cool, I'd say! |
Fever 2 onwards | Dark |
Why are a lot of his spell names so long... they make the cells big...
Ayashii
Well, I'm already here, might as well slide Aya in too. It doesn't have as many unique spells as the rest (mostly because Sega won't let it show up again unless it's a special occasion), but I still think what it's got is pretty neat. Sega Give Aya Its Own Body Challenge? Please??????
Spell | Description | ||
---|---|---|---|
Name | Effect | (Notable) Appearances | Element |
Nebula ネブラ |
The same as Klug's, though the clouds that are summoned are tinted a dark red rather than purple. | Fever 2 | Dark |
Ignis イグニス |
Also the same as Klug's in Fever 2, though 20th spices it up and has it raise "sparks" from the ground. What do you think it says about it and Klug that they shared these first 2 spells in Fever 2, but Klug diverged in the game immediately following..? I think it says quite a bit. Perhaps it scared him knowing that what they knew was the same. Just a thought. |
All | Fire |
Cardinal カーディナル |
Diacute/Accelerate equivalent. | All | Status |
Maroon マルーン |
The other Diacute/Accelerate equivalent. Before everyone had four chain spells. | Fever 2 | Status |
Oxblood オクスブラッド |
Surrounded by a crimson aura, magic builds up in its hand, shining brightly. | Fever 2 | Dark |
Pomegranate ポムガラニッド |
Likely a stronger version of Oxblood, raining down star-shaped projectiles. | Fever 2 | Dark |
Anima アニマ |
Similar to Nebula. The clouds summoned from this one change color, purple to red, purple to red... Would that make it stronger than Nebula? You decide. |
20th onwards | Dark |
Sandyx サンディークス |
A burst of electric-looking magic that manifests as a pain orb before exploding. | 20th onwards | Dark |
Rubor Vini ルボル・ウィーニー |
Summons a magical starfall, both red and blue. Love how Klug gets thrown around for this one in Tetris 2. It looks silly. |
20th onwards | Dark |
Hydrangea ハイドレンジア |
Aya's signature spell, and the only spell that its spirit has a hand in casting. In Fever 2, the body falls inactive as the spirit rises to cast, resulting in a bunch of explosions. In 20th, the spirit appears to be directly controlling the body to cast the spell, sending out 5 decently-sized projectiles. Tetris 2 leans even more into the direct control part, this time summoning an orb that creates a huge explosion on impact. The orb looks similar to the one summoned by Sig in his version of the spell. Sorry this one's longer than most others, but there's just a lot to this spell. Fever 2's version was especially surprising to see... |
All | Dark |
What I wouldn't give to see it have some story moments in whatever future Puyo games have in store...! It deserves that!
Yu and Rei
Ohhh boy. I have no idea when these two decided to break my windows and declare themselves to be some of my favorites, but they sure did do that and I've gotta deal with it somehow. I think they share their spells, it just makes sense; but assume these are cast by Yu unless otherwise stated. As for their specialties, mostly fire and dark with their strongest spells being light magic. Why? I dunno, the vibe is right.
Spell | Description | ||
---|---|---|---|
Name | Effect | (Notable) Appearances | Element |
Red Wisp, Come On! レッドウィスプカモン! |
Summons a red flame to shoot out, as the name would imply. Can be considered Yu's signature spell since she's the only one to cast this, even in the Tetris 2 alt voice! | All (Fever localization: "Trick or treat!") | Fire |
Blue Wisp, Come On! ブルーウィスプカモン! |
Summons multiple blue flames to shoot, again, as the name would imply. Yu casts this during the Fever duology, but Rei takes it up starting with 15th. It can be considered his signature spell. | All (Fever localization: "Who ya gonna call?!") Why would a ghost make a Ghostbusters reference? |
Fire |
Silent Step サイレントステップ |
Look, I saw the spell, but I cannot for the life of me describe it. She just... floats about, waving her hands... menacingly...! | Fever | Dark(?) |
Eternity エターニティー |
Yu spins skyward, surrounded by both red and blue flames. | Fever (unused and called by Rei in Fever 2) | Light + Fire |
Testament テスタメント |
Swirling magic is sent out towards the opponent, mysterious runes visible in the storm. Oddly, this one's called out by Yu but cast by Rei. | Fever 2 | Dark |
Resurrection リザレクショーン |
The thrilling sequel to Eternity, but this time sparks of (presumably) light magic swirl around her instead of flames. | Fever 2 | Light |
Reincarnation リインカーネーション |
Rei steps in, countering the opponent's attack. Displays chromatic aberration in all games except for Tetris 2. | 15th onwards | Defensive + Dark |
Grave Mist グレイブミスト |
Summons a thick mist that obscures the opponent's view. Good for unexpected Nuisance Puyos. |
15th | Dark |
Tombstone Storm トゥームストーン・ストーム |
Pretty much what it says on the tin: small tombstones are summoned and swirl around. This is probably the most dangerous of the duo's spells, in my opinion... Those are Rocks. |
15th | Dark |
Heavy Haze ヘビーヘイズ |
The thrilling sequel to Grave Mist. | 20th onwards | Dark |
Bat('s) Storm バーツストーム |
Summons a bunch of bats to swarm the opponent, as the name would suggest. In Tetris 2, they seem to be created from a little flame. | 20th onwards | Dark (+ Fire in Tetris 2) |
Rest in Peace! レストインピース! |
Yu swirls about, bringing with her a flurry of flowers. Rei joins the fun in Tetris 2; when they make peace signs, the flowers stir up and obscure the cut-in panel. Why are the Wisp spells their signatures over this? Don't ask meeeeeeeee. |
15th onwards | Light |
Heehee silly ghosts......... provided the next game isn't Tetris 3 I'm really looking forward to them being at least a little relevant again. Hopefully.
Potential Candidates For Future Spell Tables
May or may not get around to doing these, but they're real fun to do, so I'm hoping "may".
- Ocean Prince. He has... a lot of spells. It's a little surprising!
- Feli. Similar vein to Ocean Prince, she's got quite a few spells that seems like they'd be fun to cover. Note to self: light magic, bay bee.
- Any of the Compile-era characters that don't already have a chart (mostly eyeing Schezo and Witch). Now, I know the lists include some Madou/Compile spinoff spells, but seeing as I have no idea where to find these extra sources I'd probably just stick to their Sega-era spells. But they're cool, too.
Comet Summoner: How To Beat Up Dark Witch
Comet Summoner is fun and everyone should play it. Yeah, sure, it's just a small Disc Station game, but it's a really good time killer and its OST is a banger. This little guide to beating up Dark Witch is mostly for my own reference (my current record is 2:18, but there's always room to improve), but if others can get some use from it, then that's pretty cool! I kinda wanna start a speedrunning community for this game and this could be one of the sections...
A FEW THINGS TO NOTE: Witch is granted infinite stars for the fight against her dark self, which means you can easily spam comets. There's no limit on continues as far as I could see, which is useful because this fight can be terrible. And lastly, this is assuming one is playing the normal Story Mode. For Another Story Mode, Dark Witch has more HP. Phase 4 also has some AI differences that I'll cover in that section.
Phase 1
Dark Witch will float about, dropping comets. These can be easily avoided by staying under the platforms, but they also don't travel far from her. After she sends out 3, she will be surrounded with stars, and Witch will be able to trigger a chain with them that deals devastating damage. Though she's vulnerable to damage at all times, I recommend still setting these off until Dark Witch's HP runs out.
Phase 2
All of the platforms disappear, with Dark Witch sending out some of her own in a few patterns. These have stars on them, but DO NOT COLLECT/DETONATE THEM: she will collect them herself and create explosions that will deal damage. When she collects them all, get as close as possible and spam comets; if the stars haven't made as far a beeline towards Witch, as long as they haven't already been set off by Dark Witch, they'll deal more damage. Repeat this until her HP runs out. Some possible patterns include a star, oval, boxes (it's possible for Dark Witch to run into Witch and deal damage with this one) and a W.
Phase 3
Dark Witch will attempt to get close to Witch; whenever she's hit, she'll summon a barrage of comets in a specific pattern. Meteor showers, giant stars and waves are the 3 I was able to get down. They're relatively easy to avoid (stay below the middle platform and move as needed), but they deal a lot of damage. If you manage to corner her while she's floating near, you can deal a lot of damage before she attacks.
Phase 4
At last, the doppelganger grounds. Surrounded by a number of stars, she will attempt to chase Witch down to attack with her broom (at lower HP, this can turn into a painful combo complete with comets, but in Another Story she can unleash these combos right away if you get too close). Occasionally, she will float up into the air, using her stars to attack in various ways according to how many she has circling around her, which can be cancelled by hitting her. You can knock stars off of her by shooting comets; they take damage. In Another Story, she'll be able to use any of the attacks regardless of how many stars she has. Also keep in mind that Dark Witch will start swinging if you shoot comets at her when she isn't using magic. Needless to say, especially when she's low on health and more prone to combos, this can be dangerous.
- 6: The stars will attempt to surround and immobilize Witch. If her comets can't reach Dark Witch, she'll suffer damage. However, it's relatively easy to hit her, especially if she's near a platform the comets can hit.
- 5: A meteor shower is summoned. Hide under the lowest platforms. Lasts longer in Another Story.
- 4: The stars will creep along the edge of the screen as Dark Witch spams crescents (for the player, this is what X does! But it's not a boomerang.).
- 3: The stars are launched in 3 directions, looking like snakes. Easy-ish to avoid.
- 2: Dark Witch will use the stars to launch crescents. They move up and down. Stay to the opposite corner and try to keep up with the movement.
- 1: The star will take center stage, setting off large patterned chains (including but not limited to stars with 5 or 6 points, a crescent moon and a sun). Avoid this by staying to the sides. You can set them off yourself to hopefully damage Dark Witch
If you can manage to knock Dark Witch down (when playing Another Story, this can only be done by knocking all her stars off first; though in the normal mode you can do this when she's summoning her stars), when she gets up she'll launch 6 comets around her. Dodge these with help from the platforms. When she's finally beaten, explosions will surround her and she'll warp away in red. Cue Witch's cute little "Ohohoho!" animation and she's away on her broom…
If you pressed F1 on the title screen after beating Story Mode, you'll be fighting the original Witch as Dark Witch.
