Zed

Zed is a large housekeeping robot and a crew member on the Starship Tetra. Ex created Zed to take care of his daughter Ess while he is away from her, but Ess now sees him as her actual father, calling him "Papa." With his role as a parental figure, he puts high importance on good manners and a healthy lifestyle, the latter being the basis of his spells. He is based on the Z Tetrimino. (Outside of the United States, the letter 'Z' in English is pronounced as 'Zed'.)

His dropset is the same as Ocean Prince's.

Biography

Appearance

Zed is a large, spherical robot with the Z Tetrimino painted onto his chest. He has long extendable arms, claw hands, short legs, and a small head with yellow eyes peeking out from the metal.

Personality

Zed acts with the best interest of the crew in mind as he is in charge of cooking, mental well-being, and keeping the ship clean. He particularly dotes on Ess as he was programmed by Ex to be her caretaker. It is unknown how much of his personality is programmed in and how much of it is him exhibiting his own intelligence.[1]

Zed is relied on by Ess, who sees him as her true Papa.
Ex
Ex is Zed's inventor. He invented Zed to take care of Ess as he became unable to act as her father when he was summoned to become the Keeper of Dimensions.

  • Alternate Voice notes:
    • In Puyo Puyo Tetris, Zed's tone is more emotional and overdramatic.
      • In the English version, his voice is monotonous and more stereotypically robotic.
    • In Puyo Puyo Tetris 2, his tone is more rough, similarly to Lemres's alternate voice in Puyo Puyo Tetris.
      • In the English version, he speaks in a smooth, suave manner.
  • A concept art of the S.S. Tetra crew ran in the February 2021 issue of the Nintendo Dream magazine reveals Zed was originally going to be a human who wears robotic bodysuit, as well as the actual father of Ess before the concept being scrapped.
  • His concept shares some aspects with Baymax from the Disney movie Big Hero 6: They are both a robot with a round shape that is designed to keep people healthy. However, his design instead draws from retrofuturistic science fiction, in keeping with the rest of the Tetris-side characters, exemplified by Ess’s smooth, conical skirt.
